Remake-Me-Do

I just wanted to come and pimp my remake of Cruising on Broadway which I've just released.

I know Stu was a big fan of the original and I've been in touch Jeff Naylor through development and he likes what I've done with the update.

It's not as brutal as the Speccy version, but hopefully not too casual either.

I hope it's not too out of sorts me posting about it here, just popping a message because of it being in the YS top 100 and Stu mentioning it in the past.

http://www.tcksoft.co.uk/downloads/remakes/cobex-cruising-on-broadway-extra/

I hope you like it or at least don't hate it *too* much. :)

Stuff to do in Ediburgh when I got there for a couple of days next month. Hit me.

Remember Cockburn St. and some sweetshop being highlights from Stu's article a couple of years ago. Any other recommendations?

Well, if you like rain. And roadworks. :)

Eating: Mother India (Infirmary Street) does an interesting tapas style where you get three or four different things to try. Can be pricey depending on how hungry you are, and it gets really busy later at night.

The Mosque kitchen (near Potterrow) does cracking food during the day for about four quid.

Boozing: The Guildford Arms (behind Burger King, East Princes Street), The Abbotsford (Rose Street) and Cloisters (Tollcross) all have an excellent range of nice beer.

Way down in darkest Leith, in the middle of apparently nowhere, there's a lovely pub called The Pond which in addition to the fish tanks (natch), also had a working Space Invaders machine (10p a go) last time I checked.

I've just been trying out a version of Rainbow Islands on the Mega Drive that played a fairly rubbish rendition of "Cosmic Air Way" from Darius on the first island, and even used some of its enemies. I've only spent any notable amount of time with the arcade and NES versions, and I know that Taito are always referencing their own stuff, but I was fairly weirded out. Darius is one of my favourite series, but this is horrid!

Waiting for the punchline

Don't know if you're aware, but collecting the diamonds in exact order, left to right, on all seven levels of the original opened up a further three Islands - of which Darius Island was one. I've never reached it on the coin-op as I'm fucking rubbish from round 4 onwards, but the MD 'Extra' version you've just been playing uses the original level layouts with graphics and music from other stages welded on. I think it looks horrid myself, but I've never seen the actual coin-op levels.

Hello all,

I've been distant and quiet for months, so long that you've probably completely forgotten me. Which means it's of course perfect time to mention that I'm now trying to sell you something!

Posted Image

exp. is my 32-page video game 'zine. As my etsy page states:

"Intended to offer a different and defiantly print-orientated style of video game writing, the magazine takes the form of several experiential articles considering the games Mathew experienced from the 21st September to 25th October 2009 (though not in chronological order.) The articles aren't reviews or critical essays, and are instead intended to reflect the thoughts had while playing.

Articles include:
- Punch Out!! (A failed poem)
- Metal Gear Ac!d (An absurdly complex DIY boardgame for one)
- Red Faction Guerrilla (A dream of a spaceship)
- And more!

These articles will NEVER appear online and this first edition is a special, limited version produced only for sale at Canzine, Canada's largest 'zine fair. Any future editions of this issue will be subtly different, so this is your only chance to own the unique first edition!"

I have some spare copies available for anyone on the forum, I'd be really excited to hear what you think of it! Just message me if you're interested!

Like I say, no offence meant, but there have been too many cases of people taking the piss. However, the good news is that subscriber features are "unlocked" after a year, which means the Metal Slug 7 review will be free to all next month.
It's been more than a month. Can I finally read the review?

Interesting. Year after year, I still get more birthday wishes from automated forum notices than actual people. Friendship 2.0 or something. Anyway, 29 today, go me, still dang beautiful all these years. Got the day off for tomorrow which brings no comfort given the obscene amount of work I have to do -_-

To mark the 20th anniversary of Doolittle, The Pixies website is offering a free download-only live EP. A nice enough thing to get for free. http://www.pixiesmusic.com

Note: before you get the download, you'll need to reply to an email that adds you to The Pixies email list. Easily enough remedied (you can remove yourself if you want, I should imagine, and it's not as if they're doing a lot of newsworthy things these days), but possibly worth mentioning all the same.

Really? Odd, AVG doesn't report any problems, and it's usually very twitchy when it comes to suspect sites.

I just got a Wii RGB cable in the post. It improves the display quite nicely for most of my games, but when I try to run imported GameCube stuff (through the region-free GC Booter), the whole image is displayed in a deep red. I've had similar problems in the past with other consoles and TVs (usually turning everything green), but I know that the CRT I'm currently using definitely supports this output, as I use RGB cables with most of my older import-friendly consoles. Any ideas, folks?

Y'know, you're probably more likely to get help on things like that if you make a new thread.

I had a similar error with Avast. Something to do with an iframe.

I don't like starting new threads for wee tech problems, though, and figured most people pass through here. It's no big deal - soz.

'Super Paper Bastard', more like.

In EVERY SANE GAME IN THE UNIVERSE, a bit of dialogue would go something like this:
Character: "Will you do this thing you have to do to continue the game?"
You: "No."
Character: "I'll ask again"
You: "No."
Character: "Possible loop, maybe with minor variations on the question until you say yes. Or I'll just take the yes as read now, perhaps in an amusing manner."
[Game continues.]

In 'Super Paper Mario', you watch a fairly charming opening animation for a few minutes, get to your first actual bit of interaction which is a question like the above, EXCEPT instead of it looping or auto-continuing, if you say "No" three times, it gives you a 'Game Over' screen. Ha ha, quite humorous. EXCEPT, no, it's an actual fucking proper Game Over and you have to start again, and go through the entire bloody intro all over again.

So, fun replaced with seething hatred, and the game begins by making a statement that will fuck with my enjoyment of anything from then onwards: "Don't do anything other than what is the boring correct first option, or you will be brutally punished for it."

What a load of prick.

I thought SPM was rather disappointing too. I gave up about 3/4s through, when the gameplay became very samey and there seemed to have very little thought put into the level design. The game has a great 'gimmick' behind it, absolutely superb and unique, yet it's like all the potential was squandered.

I didn't like the pseudo-progression of the combat: I didn't change my tactics as the game developed (like I did in The Thousand Year Door) or use any of the seemingly-useless inventory weapon things. Err. And there was that massively annoying puzzle involving unmarked blocks that nearly defeated me.

It seems annoying so far. Not in the same way as it was annoying with that first trick, but in that it's often so pretty and could/should be amazing, like a new 'Yoshi's Island', but then it just... goes a bit wrong. It looks fantastic in 2D, and the 3D switch looks ace, but playing it in 3D it can look a bit sparse and horrible. Also, RPG power ups and HP things seem completely superfluous in what is clearly a platformer. And why the hell is there a timer on being in 3D? It just makes it irritating to switch back to 2D and stand still for a while.

I don't think there's a handy Wii thread that wouldn't be dredging one up from a year ago, so I guess i'll shove this awkwardly in here:

Nice that Nintendo decided to sort some stuff out to coincide with me getting a Wii. For those who have mothballed their console, those stuff are these:

The internet channel is free again. Hurrah for slightly awkward stardard-def browsing. Works rather nicely, though, and is a million miles better than the not-worth-the-bother DSi browser.

An iPlayer channel is being released this week. Hurrah for on-demand on my TV. (This'll be of less interest to those with Virgin, obv.)

The Wii shop is starting to do demos. There are three up now
- a fun sort of Pong-meets-Breakout-meets-a-shoot-em-up-sort-of thing, which has the drawback of breaking my eyes a bit,
- a Final Fantasy thing I haven't played yet
- a platformer, which in visual style reminds me of that 'Pandemonium' game on the original N-Gage (it's weird that that's a retro look now,) and in further nostalgia-raising has a bit in the actual demo where you can actually block yourself in and have to kill yourself to continue. Fairly fun other than that.

(The drawback to the demos is that, after playing a level, it automatically takes you to the Wii Shop page to buy the game. Bugger off!)

Additionally, as a sort of nice surprise, there's now this weird scheme whereby new Wii owners (or newly online Wii owners) can get themselves and a chum a free 500 Wii shop points by saying one helped t'other get them online. As I've got an X-Box for 8-bit emufun, though, and seemingly sod all for that price in the WiiWare catalog, those might be staying in the bank for a good while.

Doesn't feel rushed to completion, so much as it was completed and wasn't then given the extreme QA kicking that Nintendo used to be (?) renowned for. Instead of extreme sparseness and a horribly cheap timer, they should have just restricted the dimension flipping to specific points, maybe connected to a button or block, rather than having it pointlessly available all the time. So far anyway, it seems like they went for tidying up the current draft rather than giving it the major rewrite it could've done with.

I'll stick with it because I've bought it, but at the moment I'd much rather have a pleasure flight around Wii Sports Resort Island than bother pushing on past the first world of 'Super Paper Mario'.

The flight around the Wii Sports Resort island is great. It's kind Pilotwings 64-ish, in a pleasantly unchallenging way.

My girlfriend bought herself Wii Fit Plus (the software) last week, and, pleasingly, the island of Wii Sports Resort features in Plus. Wii Fit Plus itself was less of a let-down than Resort to play, if featuring far less new games than you'd imagine.
