What intrigues me at least a bit is how much the DSi and XL are going to be selling at come the 12th.

£115 in Tesco, according to this, with photo evidence of a big poster. Although I've not seen it posted on HotUKDeals or anything, which is unusual, so I wouldn't go driving off to a big Tesco just yet (although if the offer is now live, £115 with the time left to register for the 20 free games is a pretty amazing deal when all's said and done).

I must admit, as I have an unused 8GB iPod Touch kicking around that would fetch £55 cash at CEX last time I looked, the idea of getting a 3DS with Ridge Racer for an outlay of £75 is starting to look moderately tempting, with a brand-new 3D Mario coming up before Christmas. I'd have to get the 3DS and Mario preowned, of course, to avoid giving Nintendo any money, but that'd just knock another £5-10 off the price, so all good.

I'd think that's pretty much bullshit, really, certainly one of those knee-jerk sensationalist reactions to a bad sales quarter. It's not like Nintendo is in the position Sega was in after the Saturn and Dreamcast. If anything, hopefully the humiliating need to reduce the 3DS price so soon means they'll have learned their lesson and will come out fighting with the Wii-U. Mind you, with Nintendo you never can tell.

Looking at the topic title and your most recent blog post, RevStu IF THAT IS YOU REAL NAME, can it be surmised that you are, now, excited about the 3DS?

AND AS A SIDE QUESTION TO ALL:

Can something like a price drop swing a person from a total lack of caring (FOR EXAMPLE "REVSTU" I AM NOT SAYING THAT THIS APPLIES TO YOU DAMNIT) to suddenly espousing the benefits and joys of the thing (SUCH AS RE: VSTU HAS NOW IN HIS RECENT 3DS-CENTRIC BLOG POST)?

For example, I couldn't give a toss about the PS3, as I already own a current-generation console and have lots of movies in other formats already, thanks. But if they were to suddenly drop in price to £50, I'm sure I'd be screwing my face up with effort, trying to be heard on how oh my goodness these PS3s are awesome and cor how about that new Blu-Ray edition of The Thing (OR SOME "THING" HA HA JOKE), eh?

With that in mind, what would it take YOU (or someone more interesting nearby whose opinion you could usefully co-opt here) to go all ga-ga over something you currently have a strong position against? Can you admit to ever having done this, and what do you think that says about you/us/the cost of stuff/whatever?

Discuss/Ignore etc.

I've usually been a late adopter (buying a SNES in...1996?...a Playstation in 1997...a 360 in 2008) and have usually been swayed by a price drop. I was never really anti-SNES (not really played one before I picked one up from a local second-hand shop), equally ambivalent to the PS (though grabbed one pretty shortly after they became £129) but I was vaguely anti-360 (as the only game I had enjoyed when playing on other people's systems was Hexic and couldn't see the point of any of the other games. Particularly Gears of War which I despised).

I don't think there was a massive price drop for the 360 when I bought mine; though I did get a rather good deal (somewhere in the region of £220 for a 60gb model with Fallout 3 and...erk...both Gears of Warses.

And if the PS3 dropped to a miraculous, hobo-like-me friendly price then I probably still wouldn't bother; I'll be playing Super Stardust HD and Wipeout on a friend's system soon and they are the only games that have even slightly interested me in the console.

TO SUMMARISE: a price drop has never swung me from 'hate' to 'love' but has propelled me to a purchase that I wouldn't really have considered at a higher price.

I'd say my level of excitement could be measured by the fact that it's now three days since I got the 3DS and I still don't own a game for it...

I will reverse recommend Pilotwings Resort, as it is shockingly short and shallow. I know the previous games in the series were hardly epics (and not meant to be), but they were good fun, and weren't just a sawn-off port of another game, namely Wii Sports Resort in this case. Does show off the 3D display rather spectacularly well, but as a game to purchase, unless it gets to ten quid or less, it's not worth the bother.

Rumours that Nintendo are reading a new version of the 3DS - http://www.reghardware.com/2011/08/23/nintendo_reportedly_preparing_3ds_replacement/

... without 3D.
There is something funny about that.

I bought some stuff off the eShop, but was irritated to find that Nintendo Point cards don't work (they changed from points to actual currency, probably just to fuck off everyone that's hoarded cheap points cards).

To make matters worse, the eShop only lets you deposit money in set amounts, so you always end up with an odd amount left over that you can't spend without adding more funds. It's the same rip-off points system but without the facade.

At least the PlayStation Store lets you pay the exact amount (with a minimum deposit of £5). And is cross-platform too.

And don't get me started on how much of a disgrace the eShop is to navigate. Imagine walking into a shop, to find that most of the products for sale are hidden away in the back and the only way to access them is by giving the shopkeeper a list of cryptic criteria for him to read them out from a massive list, five at a time. Oh and some of the items that are on display can't be bought in this shop. You have to go catch a bus into a different town and buy it from there. Ngggggh.

Here's a new add-on for the 3DS that Nintendo will be announcing on the 13th of this month:

http://i.imgur.com/COczr.jpg

So far from the PS3 launch bungle checklist;

Launch at a ridiculously expensive price - Check
Sell fuck-all - Check
Drop the price - Check
Remedy penny-pinching, short-sighted controller configuration by charging existing users for new kit - Check
Release new hardware revision which improves looks ten fold and drops pointless tech nobody wanted in the first place - TBA

Rumours have it that Nintendo will also be announcing a new 3DS revision next week that adds the second slider and removes 3D which would check the last box.

Does anyone at the company have a fucking clue as to what they are doing?

Those Game Boy Advance 'Ambassador' games are allegedly going to be downloadable from Friday, with this the alleged list of games. Not a bad selection, if true.

F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island
Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Metroid Fusion
Wario Land 4
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames

Yep, no arguing with the quality of that lot. Not sure if they're worth the £120 they effectively cost, but they're certainly mostly top-grade stuff.

Don't know if this is available on 3DS, but I switched on my DSi for the first time in ages today (man, it holds charge well,) and Zelda Four Swords is free on the DSiShopThing. I can't be arsed with playing it, but hey, summat for nowt, innit. Free 'til 20th Feb.

Yeah, you can download it for free on the 3DS as well.

I'm quite enjoying the amount of free stuff Nintendo have chucked at me seeing as I bought it for the price drop price whilst being still eligible for the Ambassador program.

10 great NES games, 10 great GBA games, Four Swords and 3D Classics Excitebike are already downloaded.

Plus if you register two selected games on Club Nintendo before the end of the month, you get a free copy of 3D Classics Kid Icarus. I had Pilotwings, Starfox and Super Mario eligible to enter.

Nintendo's disaster has played right into my hands.
