EDIT: NOW RELEASED!
http://headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=mmll

Been keeping quiet about this one since it was started in May, but as the public cat's been let out of the secrecy bag on the internet this morning, you might as well see some more up-to-date pics than the ones going around. Alert viewers may recall my Retro Gamer piece of the same title, which collected together extra levels from non-Spectrum ports of Manic Miner to invent a notional "lost" 20-level sequel. I'd already made one abortive attempt to turn it into reality in conjunction with a Speccy modder (this page was the first workings, all the way back in 2004), but now with the work of some exceptionally talented DS coders and artists the game is getting quite close to fruition, and a damn nice fruition it looks like being. These are some of the latest shots of the attract mode showing a few of the completed and fully-playable levels. (In-game the bottom screen is occupied by a scroll telling the story, which I'm adapting from the version I wrote for RG.) No release date yet (there are still some tricky levels to implement), but it's moving along at a fair pace. Frankly I think it could turn out one of the DS's best platform games.

Waiting for the punchline

That looks bloody nice, I'd be most interested in playing this, my only concern being how well these levels work in comparison to Matt Smith's originals - I don't think I've ever played a Mainc Miner level that wasn't included in the original.

The ones I chose for The Lost Levels are all superb levels, otherwise there wouldn't be much point.

oioioi a sort of Stuart campbell designed game after scorpion software, sounds fun!
(this thread doesn't break your nda with RG?)

I don't have an NDA with RG, and the game is nothing to do with them anyway.

There were some good new levels in the Sam Coupe version. Are any of them carried over to here?

Let's hope it turns out to be more well-produced than the GBA version, eh folks?

well i didn't really mean an nda, but though you might said you did a special article on this to coincide with the game, and might had it RG branded or something

Interesting to note a narrative on the lower DS screen there.

That looks jolly fabulous, in a typically-difficult-manic-miner kinda way. The music's ace, too.

Do you have an ETA?

Is this to be a freeware release I'm guessing?

It looks very nice indeed. If I still had a DS, I would definitely get it.

Last post on my corner of the interweb from one of the devs:

the game is about half finish or such. there is still something to due and Flash have some problems with his jaw as well, so.I hope soon (It's great even in this state it already now). I have still a least 7 tunes to been finished for the game.....

That was a few days back.

I wouldn't really bother with the demo. It's a -very- early build that a load of sites decided to run with the other day screaming "OFFICIAL DEMO" or some such shit. I'd wait till something worth downloading appears.

Hello all,

Just to update on the MMLL status.

Firstly, that demo posted everywhere was 2 days work on starting the detection, nothing more.. If you accidently download it, I would recommend burning your pc, digging a hole and burying it in the garden (or flower box if you live in a flat). The demo is shit! and was not intended for release, but was posted on my site as a test for users to let me know if the control, etc was ok!

Right..

MMLL (present)..

The latest build has tons in it and is well over half way finished in relation to levels and gameplay. Though, this does not indicate a release in the next few weeks. What needs to be done is the little things that take so long, game over, high-score, options, secrets, etc.etc.etc.

But, I am very pleased with the way it is turning out.

The game also contains 10 new levels based on classic films. These are unlocked after finishing the 20 lost levels. The latest one is King Kong 1933, complete with Empire State building and giant Kong. Sadly, no near-naked Fay Wray though :(

Right, I shall bugger off now, and I am sure Stuart will keep you posted.

All the best.

Looking good. If I were to make one suggestion it would be you'll need to be careful to keep the contrast between gameplay elements (foreground) and background non interactive elements nice and clear. The beauty of the original black backgrounds is they don't make the screen too busy. I think some of the animation with rain, stars and leaves floating around the place could get tiresome. The character/enemy colours seem a bit too muted to me on the brighter levels. The dark levels look far slicker than the colourful ones.

We are trying hard to combine improved graphics and retain clarity.

But.. There will be points where it may be harder to see things than in other areas. But.. I think it is working ok at the moment - hopefully!

Oh, and a few more screens...

Work is getting there... Menu system is intact (remembers last played level, select game mode, etc) and all levels are in and playable (33 at the moment - though a couple more secret levels may be added)

Not sure on release, perhaps early November?

An obvious solution would be to offer the option of a blank background. A more awkward option would be dimming the background by some user-definable amount.

Even more awkward would be an "inverse flashlight" - dim the background immediately behind Willy (and/or the enemies).

That's looking really nice though.

There are now a bunch of excellent SAM levels appearing as "bonus" levels separate from the main game.

Lots of very fast progress being made by the awesome coding team, The Lost Levels are starting to loom on the horizon...

As soon as it's released they're not Lost any more. Paradox!
