PS2 shooters

Waiting for the punchline

We have a PS2 gathering dust somewhere which I've decided to dig out to give Shadow Of The Colossus a go. Now I thought I remembered a rash of JPN shooters being released by some budget company a year or two back, but a quick look on the net seems to yield nothing but hugely overpriced tat. Amazon has one copy of Raidne 3 at £99.99! I'd like to go the route of iriginal discs if poss, anyone know what did come out and if they're still attainable without paying silly money?

I've got R-Type Final and Psyvariar for PS2 and they are both excellent shooters. Can recommend both and they were readily available for under a tenner on Amazon when I got them. I think I paid about £5 on average for my PS2 titles.

£99.99? Blimey!

I assume you're talking about 505 Gamestreet and similar ranges, aye? You should be able to pick up Gunbird Special Edition, Dragon Blaze and Homura for about a tenner each, unless they've also slipped through a wormhole to the Robbing Bastard dimension.

Gradius V is the best shooter I've played on PS2.

Certainly better than R-Type Final and Psyvariar (which are both excellent games).

It's fairly rare these days, but I'm sure you can pick it up on Ebay for far, far less than £99.99 !

Haven't played Raiden 3 but I highly doubt it's as good as Gradius V.

Ah, great. Any of them actually worth bothering with though? Dragon Blaze was a 8ing/Raizing jobbie wasn't it?

Castle Shikigami 2 seems to go for less than a tenner on PlayTrade.

Bought it from Woolies after Stu said it was worth a tenner; haven't played it for aaaaaages, but as I recall it's a vertical Bullet Hell-stylee schmup with a bullet-grazing bonus/power-up mechanism.

I've already got Shiki 2 and Psyvarier 2 for DC, may get the PS2 versions if they're any good and flog the DC versions. Same games or different versions/sequels?

Looks like there may be some differences in content for each port of Shiki 2; dunno what the PS2 version has over the DC, if anything. The western dub (may be just the PS2 version) comes in for some hate, but I can't recall how bad it really was.

You need Psyvariar Revision. If you've got a decent arcade stick, that is. Using the roll button is blasphemy. It's wonderful (and better than Psyvariar 2, natch - although not as pretty).

I've got most of those. Psyvariar is good, but it's a bit of an acquired taste. I just can't get into it really.

Gradius V is perfection. Only problem is the levels are really long so it takes 40 minutes before you're getting to the stage where you're challenging your high score, so you die and have to play another 40mins to get there.

I thought R-Type Final was shite. Levels waaaaaay too long. It's bloody gorgeous, but I'd rather play R-Type Delta on the PS1 which is a bit shorter, sharper and still pretty damn gorgeous considering the system it's on.

The Gunbird games are OK. I prefer the Strikers 1945 games though. Those are fantastic.

Yeah, it's a marmite game. You'll know quickly if you love it or not, and if not it's not worth persisting with as it'll just irritate you.

Of course, there are the Cave ports too. Do DonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou and Espgaluda are arcade perfect.

I wanted to like Gradius V, but it was way too 'Treasure' for me. I really wanted DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou, but unless I've missed something, a UK release for either that, or the Raiden Fighters comp (which I've been waiting for since it was announced for the original Xbox) is looking increasingly unlikely.

Yes, but which one's your favourite?

Does Red Star count? That was pretty good.

I still haven't played that, but I don't think we should include it here, nah. If we do, then we must also include Neo Contra, which is one of the most underrated and overlooked games on the system.

Really? I never bothered with any of the PS2 Contra games as I had the vague impression they were all utterly without merit.

Oof, no! The PS1 Contras were horrendous, but Shattered Soldier is fantastic if you're not averse to memorisation-heavy boss-marathons, and Neo Contra basically plays like Mercs or Shock Troopers, but better.

Hehe, boss. It's the one Contra game I'd say is best played with a partner, though. It's not too tough, so you can dive straight in and actually enjoy the 2-player dynamics, instead of just wishing your pal would buy it and practice.

Recommended Import PS2 Shooters
ESP Galuda (Best Cave sooter since DoDonPachi)
Mushihime Sama (Arrange Mode is wonderful - as are the graphics for this one)
Psyvariar 2 Ultimate Final
Castle Shikigami 2
Thunderforce VI

Recommended Non-Import (PAL) Shooters
Gradius V (Wonderful)
Raiden 3
Psyvariar Complete
Dragon Blaze
Homura

Its worth noting that if you TATE your tv/monitor for vertical shooters Gigawing Generations (Unbelievable, a game that was orginallly full-screen vertical is now changed to tate ratio screen without a proper tate mode! wtf?) and Psyvariar Complete dont do TATE.

Psyvariar Complete does feature tate mode, mate, and can run in 60hz. You need to turn these on at the options screen (for both games), which you can access by pressing select instead of start.

By the way, people are recommending excellent games here, but they're mostly expensive imports. I think Marc was specifically asking about the £10-ish budget titles available in the PAL territories. Most of Cave's PS2 ports cost me £50+.

Yeah, the Cave stuff is a bit out of my range at the moment unfortunately, else I'd be springing for Galuda and Mashi straight away. Same with the 360 games, why nobody seems interested in picking these up for a UK release I don't know. I've been enjoying me some Bakraid this week, the first 8ing/Raizing shooter to ever really click with me.

I was sniffing around ebay for ps1 games and found something that makes the £100 Raiden 3 price seem almost sensible in comparision : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Playstation-1-Gradius-Deluxe-Pack-Japanese_W0QQitemZ310097962197QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Games?hash=item48334764d5&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

What the hell? I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy the PCBs for both games included on that disc for the money they are asking. Crazy.

Yeah I just picked up Psyvarier Complete and it's definitely got Tate. It's pig-ugly, but it seems to be a better game than 2 for me, more reliant on the shooting than the 'Buzz' gimmick.
