Waiting for the punchline

I thought I’d start this as we don’t actually seem to have a recent thread to discuss, well, games.

Myself I’m shit-bored of current gen and everything I’ve bought has either been stuff I missed first time round, stuff I didn’t like first time and am trying to reappraise, and stuff I never played at all. Currently, I’m tackling:

Duke 3D: which is just great.

Fallout: which seems nice enough, but is far to vast and time consuming for my meagre gaming hours.

TimeSplitters 2: which I can’t believe I missed first time around. It’s Goldenye, but fast, smooth, and entirely bereft of the po-faced twatting about of most modern shooters. Is 3 just more of the same?

Metroid Prime: I don’t like the controls. Yes, I know it’s not a FPS as such, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck… it just doesn’t feel natural to play and it’s a shame as it seems wonderfully designed and very atmospheric.

Resident Evil (Cube): I know that in real terms it’s hopelessly broken, convoluted and clumsy, but I love it anyway.

18 Wheeler (DC): It’s like OutRun 2, but slower, with cheaty bastard opposition, yet I kind of like it.

Suzuki Alstare (DC): Wheeeeeeeee!

Red Faction Guerrilla, 360: one of the rare games during which I think "What can I do?" rather than "What am I supposed to do?". Staggeringly good fun.

Zack & Wiki on the Wii: superb puzzle/action game. Satisfying cranial-warp stuff.

And H, of course.

Duke 3D has the finest level design of possibly any game I can recall. I gave up on TS2 as it seemed insanely hard (back in the day I would always crank the settings to HARD first time through) due to unseen comedy sniper alleyways. The levels felt linear and a bit sparse when compared to GoldenEye. TS3 is funnier, more linear, less varied by skill level, includes surprising Halo-tribute controls/design and has better multiplayer. And an amusing announcer.

GTA: Chinatown Wars. It's my easily my favourite out of the entire series, partially because I am immensely cack-handed and therefore find controlling any of the others (especially IV, but I have a feeling that one isn't entirely my fault) very difficult. Also, this one has just been the most fun to play, hence I've stuck with it for more than a week.

Road Fighter (on the DS Konami comp, obv). I didn't realize there was a 'hi-gear' button until I'd played it a few times, thinking "hmm.. this is rather slow.." but when I found it... man, what a game.

Chrono Trigger DS - Around 20 hours in wondering what I'm supposed to do now I have this time egg thing. It's been an enjoyable enough distraction for when I'm traveling and it's pretty nicely written and all that, but there's just something which bugs me about it. I just want another Phoenix Wright game. Or Time Hollow.

I really did like this to begin with, but felt that after just a few levels it fell into really frustrating and repetative level design, and the vehicle levels were fucking horrible.

Escape From Monkey Island, in preparation for the new MI game out next week. And, because I pre-ordered Tales From Monkey Island (shamefully buying a game on the strength of its name and the trailer without seeing any gameplay- when will I learn?), I get to play a free 'episode' of any other Telltale Game. So I went for Wallace and Gromit, which I'm about to try out.

I've mostly been playing Lego Star Wars on both 360 and PSP. Also Gurumin on PSP, which is just a fun little rompy platformer.

Dragon Quest: Hand of the Heavenly Bride on the DS.

A remake, but heck, it's the first game to (Spoiler: have my in-game wife tell me she loves me while in labour with my kids.)

Common in real life, but not in games, I guess.

um

pretty much snap about everything you've said about chrono trigger, even where you've got up to in the game......

*spooky*

and yeah I'd love another phoenix wright game (the third one is one of my favourite games of recent years) but jebus, apollo justice just isn't good enough.....

The other game I'm playing at the moment is gba fire pro 2 - but that might easily be misawa nostalgia

Apollo Justice was fine if you ask me. I just want another game like that. I insist the produce one every three to four months. No particular fancy updates required just more story!

Prototype (PC): Like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction but without the charm. The ridiculous story takes itself too seriously, the peripheral missions are boring, there's a couple of cheap bosses that just render most of your hard-earned abilities moot, and the city is ugly and - with the exception of a handfull of landmarks - just can't live up to Liberty City. The saving grace is the chaos you find yourself in from time to time. Hijacking military vehicules, a split second jump that dodges a missile, assuming someone else's identity to avoid attention - these are nice.

Overlord Minions (NDS): What started out as an action romp with ocasional puzzle elements and a slight nod to Lost Vikings (in terms of different characters with special abilities having to split up and open passages or defeat enemies) seems to become rather boring. The idea *is* nice, in a sidestory kind of way - replace the titular overlord with direct control over the minions themselves - but it's repeating itself too much and the over-reliance on stylus controls (everything is interacted with the stylus) kinda brings it down. I'm still in the beginning though, so it might change.

Finally got round to getting Soul Bubbles (it's only available in the US at Toys R Us and is currently $9.99) and am liking it thus far. Knights in the Nightmare and The Dark Spire keeping me occupied so far. When my Wii returns from repair I'll get back into Tiger Woods 10. Need to check out more of the cheap iPod stuff.

Sonic Mega Collection (Gamecube).

I'm just realising how bad most of the Sonic series is. And that's even before we got to the terribleness of the 3D games.

I'd still like to play Sonic CD one of these days, though. That may actually be decent to play.

I can't quite recommend the first since I think Overlord 2 is better. The basics are still there, that unlikely mash-up of Dungeon Keeper and Pikmin still being the main course and Fable's notion of twisted fairytale and satire much better accomplished, but it's more polished and the minions are definitely funnier. Camera problems are still its biggest killer, though :(

Overlord Minions for the DS so far seems to be a hooker with a heart of gold. You know they it has good intentions but somewhere under the hood sifilis is waiting to strike. Since it's all stylus based, I've found myself wasting special attacks by simply clicking too fast and I had to fail a couple of times to get the hang of Stinker's (one of the minions) stealth. In retrospect, there is a radius showing just how far you can place and drag the stylus to move him, but the sensitivity is a bit hit or miss. Up until now combat hasn't been very deep - it requires quick sweeps across the screen over an enemy - so instead of button mashing you have frantic screeen sweeps. Not necessarily worse but not better, either.

I've just finished killing a boss and while the general idea was nice - a boss with three stages, each making use of a minion's abilities - I keep getting interrupted between these phases with hints from Gnarl, leader of the minions (the titular Overlord is like an ironhead, present in the story but letting the minions do all the work; I think I haven't seen it yet). I suspect this was done to set the stage but I would have prefered it to be continuous. Still, there was a light Zelda vibe when dealing with the boss. You need to push blocks to stop its ooze from spilling, then throw fireballs at some gaseous bulbs to wither its defenses, then throw a plant of some kind at its mouth and detonate it with yet more fireballs, and after all that it's time to move in and whack it to bits in melee.

While it was nice, having to switch between minions means losing control and sight of one of them (up until now I can only control two at a time but there are a total of 4 to choose from; not sure if I'll ever control all 4) and often I noticed one died without having seen what caused it. Then again, there seems to be a handfull of respawn points to alleviate this. They're not automatic though; you need to take the remaining minion to one and activate it to respawn the fallen one.

There's a certain charm to it, I'll give it that. There's a Mincyclopedia, or similar, detailing enemy stats, powers and other characters. The artwork is also on the cutesy side. The music is pretty much what you'd expect for the theme of the game. Not "epic", not Harry Potter... "Happy Halloween", perhaps, if it were a genre. Or "Gothic Smilies" suffixed with ^_^ ?

You can tell the Lost Vikings DNA, but only on a surface level. It's not as splendid as that, natch. Of course, there are obstacles only one type of minion can overcome (Stinky can pass unharmed through gas, the red minion can shoots fireballs and pass through fire, the water one can... you can see where this is going, right?), but nothing as brill as TLV until now.

Need to press onward and see how long the formula lasts.

Earthbound again, I've got very near the end before. And I wanna see the legendary last boss.
Oh man, that's one of my all time favourite endings.

Um, I've been playing co-op Gears and Oblivion since I just picked up a 360, finished the former twice and now nearing the end of the latter and need something new. I think Halo 3 and Lost Odyssey seem to be reasonable replacements, though wouldn't mind something different. Any recommendations (given that I'm in Korea and anything too obscure I won't be able to find) would be welcome.

I notice there's barely been a 9/10 in Eurogamer's coverage over the past 6 months, is this a really bad time for games? Or am I just misremembering past years of barren release schedules? Is there anything close to AAA out there that I've missed?

Everyone always seems to crap their pants over Popcap games but I never seem to get them. Like the 'one more go' element of Peggle. If I fail a level I leave it at that for probably a week or two.

Plants vs zombies I've never been able to play for more than about 10 minutes without getting bored.

Must be something wrong with me then.

Another nod for this. I've played through Earthbound a pretty silly number of times and that bit's always as intense as when I first played it.

I finished Mother 3 recently, now THAT ending is crushing... heartbreaking in fact. And it sure was a joy to finally play it after so much waiting.

What else? Also played through Seiken Densetsu 3 and found it... not a huge let-down, but definitely lacking the magic of the prequel. You can tell they were dying to make it turn-based. But then I played Chrono Trigger right after and found it a joy, so maybe it's that SD3 is just kinda fussy and tiresome.
