Virtual controls are fine in a lot of games, awful in others. Minigore uses virtual twin sticks and controls as well as anything I've ever played. Doom Classic isn't as good as the PC or 360 versions, but controls better than any of the other versions I've tried. For the first couple of weeks I had my iPhone I was convinced that virtual controls could never work, but the Resident Evil games (of all things) convinced me otherwise. |

You can't use the device as a USB disk, but there are a bunch of apps that enable you to use it as a wireless hard drive (such as Air Sharing). As for transfer, it's iTunes or nothing.
For ex-digital control games, iPod isn't great. But for certain game types, you interact directly with the content, and it works brilliantly, such as Eliss and Drop7. That said, when companies design specifically for the platform rather than trying to shoe-horn in IP from vastly different platforms, even touch-screen 'digital' controls work, such as with the rather spiffy Soosiz.
Bit harsh. I have a huge range of games with a huge range of control methods. Some are great and some suck. Not much different to any other platform, then.
Those guys fucked up. Apple said "don't leave this feature in and we'll all be happy". They left the feature in.
How many emulators are officially available for the DS and PSP that are free and enable you to add your own games? None. And although I appreciate the effort behind C64.app, I'd sooner pay for really great ports and conversions aimed specifically at iPod than use emulation. Mind you, most of the time I'm happier spending 59p on an entirely new gaming experience rather than relying on old games—something that certainly wasn't the case on DS. |

To add to craig: i had all those emus on my iphone, but only in the first few months, when there were few good games they were played, since then for the games that played well there are native alternatives (advance wars) and others didn't play that well. After 3.0 i decided not to jailbreak again. |

Weekend games. Zombie Dash - Use virtual trackball to get through randomly-generated mazes avoiding zombies and traps. Takes a bit of getting used to, but actually works very well when you get used to it. Nice QTEs when you get hit by enemies, too. Worth 59p. Wheeler's Treasure - Bizarre side-scroller. Swipe to jump while protecting your wheel, collecting treasure and killing enemies. Bit of a learning curve. Launch price of 59p is very good, given the level of polish and amount of stuff to unlock. Rock Band - Surprisingly, had great fun with this, but glad I paid £3.99 and not £5.99. Tapping the screen instead of plastic instruments works well. Much simpler than the PSP version, but it fits the platform, I reckon. Doom Classic - Best portable version of Doom I've played, including homebrew attempts on other consoles. I spend an awful lot of time playing this over the weekend. If you love Doom, you need this. Ugly front end and terrible default controls, though. Dreadmill - Simple game, but fun once you learn the necessary timing. Tap top of screen to jump, tap bottom to duck, avoid saw blades that come at you. It's no Canabalt or Mr.AahH!!, but I like it and it was free at the weekend. Bloons Tower Defense - I like the Flash version, so picked this up for 59p. It's a decent conversion and it feels slightly different to other TD games, due to more imaginative towers. |

FUCKING CUNTING iBASTARDTUNES. Help me people, please. I installed ITunes on my D: drive and stupidly assumed that it would store any content there, rather than my nearly-full C: drive. Of course, it hasn't. 'No problem' thought I, copy everything over, resynch, job done. Except! iTunes decides it can't be synched to 2 libraries at once, despite the fact that I've deleted the original folder after copying it to C: drive. It either wants to transfer all the stuff from my iPod back to it's original location on C:, or deleted all apps from the iPod and resynch from D:. Now first time I allowed it to copy all the stuff back to C:, and copied that over to D: where I want the stuff to be. I don't know however, if my saves have been copied to the drive along with my apps, or do i loose all my progress if I now allow the iPod to resynch from D:? I was hoping, once we got the main PC back to run iTunes from that with all my content stored on a 8GB flash drive to make the whole thing nice and easy, but going through those processes now seems about as painful as gnawing off my own testicles. |

Can't you just change the location of the iTunes folder in Preferences/Advanced and let it sort itself out? I don't know how it is on Windows, though. |

See attached for the best way to leave iTunes. Pick a location, and let it sort all your stuff out, and let it organise your files. Regarding data, that will be stored on your device, not iTunes, and so a back-up should sort that next time it happens. I also usually recommend Mac users manually back-up /Users/craiggrannell/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ on a regular basis, to keep 'good' back-ups safe. I strongly suggest Windows users do the same with the equivalent folder on their machines. |

Eurogamer have just launched their own app. Basically, it's a working mobile version of the website with no ads, for a slightly deal-breaking £2.39. |

Bwahahahahaha! And indeed, hahahahahahaha! What's worse is how little interest they have in iPod gaming content anyway—the iPhone 59p 'special' a while back featured all of five (seemingly randomly selected) games. EDIT: Love their reasoning: "Everything, including the forum/comments/screenshots are formatted specifically for the iPhone" Yeah, well, half-decent websites use mobile style sheets for that. I get the non-ad thing, but formatting is something a site should be doing anyway if it wants to attract iPhone/iPod owners (and owners of similar mobile devices). Gah. I saw the story, but didn't realise they were charging, since most newspapers' iPhone apps are free. I use AdBlock so I don't get any ads anyway, and why would iPhone users read EG, with its almost no iPhone coverage? |

I'm flying back to the UK for a bit later today and this thread has been very helpful (along with the official recommendations) in helping me choose some stuff to load up and play on the way. I think I spent a bit less than $9 which is frankly amazing. I drew the line at Championship Manager which was $4.99 but I was very tempted. Looking forward to Flight Control and Drop7. |

quick couple of questions: a) out of interest what was the feature the C64 emu guys left in that pissed of apple b) is there an app that does a sort of music quiz, basically the sort of thing that was found on the earlier ipods, which I thought was properly ace, but is missing off my new nano..... |

The ability to access C64's BASIC, which for some reason is being misinterpreted by Apple to be unlocking a way of executing troublesome code (read: trojans). Or at least that's the impression I got from reading the various stories about C64 vs Apple...
There was a music quiz? Now that I didn't know. Not sure if my iPod Classic will have one... Edited by RevMarzikins, Nov 4 2009, 06:19 PM.

Hmmm, from research it seems you can use the likes of WinSCP and iPhoneBrowser to access the filesystem. No clue as to whether it would help with the transferring of your purchased apps however. Edited by RevMarzikins, Nov 4 2009, 06:25 PM.

The main C64 app feature that irked Apple was the BASIC prompt. And when Manomio resubmitted, saying they'll removed the feature, it was still accessible just be resetting a game. That isn't the way to endear yourself to Apple. |

Bah @ TUAW. I would have had that scoop, but I've been so busy I'd not had time to write it up for CoM until yesterday evening. But, yeah, the 'extra' pages now happily show in iTunes, so: hurrah! (The TUAW article seems a bit confused about the ability to keep those extra pages. 14 still show on my iPhone after mucking about with app placement and doing a sync last night. |

*Sigh* 2 small questions if anyone can help? 1) I have one album that shows up five times on the iPod Album index. It's definiately only copied over once as the tracks only appear once in the track index. Any idea why? Isn't really a problem, but it's annoying. 2) I also have 2 abums I've imported, but the artists don't show up on My iPod, so I can't synch and add them? |

It's case sensitive, so "Killed My Parents and Hit the Road" and "Killed My Parents And Hit The Road", for example, would show up separately. Although five variations is quite an achievement. Quickest fix is probably to select everything from the album and editing the properties, explicitly setting anything that should be the same for all tracks. Anything that's different for any tracks won't be populated in the bulk edit view, so it might be immediately obvious (e.g. if the album field is blank, not all tracks have the same album name). |

I checked it out, and it turned out some tracks had the 'Album Artist' field filled in, and some didn't. Ive cleared it for all tracks, ensured that they're all reading the same fields, and it's split the tracks and shows up as 2 LP's on iTunes now!? Colour me confused. |
