All over the United States, school districts are banning and/or removing the great sport of Dodgeball from the curriculum. Come on, you all know Dodgeball. Dividing the class into two teams, whipping those round balls at one another until one team have five members, and the other is down to one. It teaches coordination, perseverance, and the knowledge that you should always pick on the little guy. What a sport! Well, parents don't like it as it does pick on the little guy, teaches kids to team up against one another, and can be a little painful when you take a shot to the croutch from a softball pitcher. But this? This? CUP STACKING!!!! Cup Stacking You stack 12 cups into pyramid and knock them down? Trying to be the fastest to knock them down? What is this country coming to? I mean, hey, I cn stack 12 cups in a puramid and whip them down with what, a tennis ball? My arm? Pushing the table? Please, give me a good game of Dodgeball any day |

Hmm, I'm glad that I never played it with a cricketball. Large hittable area and such ;). Interestingly, in Dutch "dodgeball" is called "hitball"

That's interesting, Tsrill I mean, you do try to HIT people in dodgeball.Speaking of inherently sadistic games, we had a P.E. teacher in High School develop a game called animal ball. It combined Rugby and Wrestling (yep, this guy was the head wrestling coach. Basically, you have two teams of 20 guys on a wrestling mat roughly 30 meters by 20 meters. Everyone had to remain on their knees as you tried to get a nerf football (American-style) into your opponent's goal. I don't think anyone EVER scored, but it was quite easy to have massive cases of mat burn aftera good game. |

I loved dodgeball! I was a 99 pound weakling but that made me fast and hard to hit and I could hit the neaderthals who pushed me around and the snotty girls who would'nt give me the time of day with impunity.

I mean, sure, Dodgeball is sadistic and rough, but look at the replacement. Stacking cups?????? Just how physical is that? |

Last year was my daughters first Sports Day. I have such fond memories of Sports Day. I went to her's and was so disappointed. There was absolutly no element of sportsmanship. It has gotten so bad that the schools have nixed any and all sportsmanship containing the slightest notion of competitiveness. One example, when I was in school the "lamest" event was the egg and spoon race. Now its not even a race. One at a time the kids just walk around a pilon placed 15 ft ahead of the starting line. And the school even has the motto "if you dont want to, you dont have too". I felt guilty cause I hyped up my daughter so much about how fun sports day is and she held me too it. So we went to a movie after. |

How do you learn to compete with grace, if you don't have the experience? Bigger context - academics are soooo competitive at many of those same schools, and how is that any different from dodgeball? I loved it, but I know not everyone had good experiences with it. Apparently the principals and vice principals of today are the school victims of yesterday. Duck and Cover!!!! *streaks out of the thread in a hail of bright red gym balls====>>>* |

I'm sadly lacking in the dodgeball experience - I honestly didn't know what it was until I saw the movie. We play a game called poison ball, except one person is the ball thrower and the rest of the class are the targets. The idea is to hit people with the ball, who then are 'out' and join the ball thrower until the last person is left. I think it's just plain stupid how they're taking things out of schools because they're dangerous! How many of you were born in the 50's and 60's? Many of you lived in houses with asbestos insulation, and slept in cots/cribs with lead based paint on them. I know as a kid I certainly did a lot more things than kids today - and we're only talking 10 years since I left high school. We can't wrap kids in cotton wool - let them experience the same fun we did. |

The Health and Safety nutjobs have gotten hold of our age old game of 'conkers' and apparently now children have to wear safety goggles when playing this in the playground...Flamin Ridiculous...Just wrap everyone up cotton wool so that no one gets hurt...Ever...Won't that make the world a better place Honestly...Some barmpots just have far too much time on their hands  |

Asbestos aren't dangerous when safely fit with in the building. THey get dangerous when exposed, e.g. during reconstruction work. They should never have been used in the first place, as it was already known at the time that they were as bad as they are. That having said, America will be doomed in 20 years if they keep all elements of competition out of school. How can the country compete internationally if the citizens never have learnt to compete? |

See, that's thre truth. Last year we had asbestos tile removed from some of the classrooms at school over winter break. Some of the younger teachers asked me how at risk they were. I told them, 'Sure, you're at risk...If you eat every tile in that room." It's a shame that the pendulum flows quickly one way to another. Its either 'Compete and WIN at all costs' or 'Well, it's okay, we're okay, there are no winners or losers' |

Man, I loved dodgeball...we even played a version called 'killer dodgeball' this was where you were protecting bowling pins and the first team to knock out all the pins and/or eliminate the other team won. I still have flashbacks to being the last guy against 5 other jocks and holding my own. Oh the glory days. But I say get used to it...Political Correctness is coming to a town near you. |
