Yeah, I agree with that. I guess he's thinking that he'll give it back if they come and TAKE it from his cold dead hands. I understand, but then again...true character shines through, init?

unfortunately true. If an american had gotten crapped on like that, there would have been a revolt and people would march on Greece and demand that they issue a second gold medal. I hope he is real proud, cause I doubt many others are proud of him.

Yes!

*through mouthful of wings*

Well, being from NC, and having attended UNC-Chapel Hill, I'm a big Carolina fan in college athletics. In the NFL, again, I'm a homer and I'm a Panthers fan. I'm a San Francisco fan in baseball though, the reason being that the first t-ball team I ever played on was the Giants, so I became a fan when I was little and stuck with them. Yourself, J?

*thinks about the new nickname*

:happy It gets the job done.

:edit:

I'll also toss in on the gold medal dealie...what about what happened to US hoops in '72? Or Roy Jones Jr.? Both are considered massive injustices, but no other gold medals were given. The precedent just isn't there.

Oh well, at least I got to see them on TV last night!!!

Ozzy - what about the Canadian skaters and the double gold? The judge made the mistake there too, although a less than honest mistake.

I love the Packers, don't ask me why. I love the Cubs - again - not a logical thang. In hockey it's gotta be the Avalanche. Basketball I don't have a team but I tend to root for the underdog (read that non-Laker teams <eg>) I wanted Jake and company to win the SB, btw.

Yes!

Hmm...I'd forgotten the figure skaters. Curses! :P

Perhaps they are the exception that proves the rule.

I dont' know which is worse - having an injustice stand or succumbing to political correctness under pressure from bully nations.

(just read the Olympics thread - funny highlights from ATAG if you get the chance)

They did request that. Both the U.S. and Korean teams said a second gold should be issued. It was the federation that refused to issue one and also refused to admit to a mistake. All they did was suspend the judges.

Don't forget that the Korean guy who ended up with the silver would also have to give his medal back and take the bronze. I believe it was the guy who ended up with the bronze who should have won the gold.

Hamm never should have been put in this position. Sending him a letter requesting he give back the medal? That's weak.

They should not have to ask him to give it back. He should be a man and do it because its the right thing to do.

Mistakes happen in sports all the time and teams never have to give up a win. I don't see why he should be held to a higher standard just because he is an individual. The judges made the mistake, they should be the ones to correct it, not him. If they issue a ruling to take it from him, then fine. But it is not his job to correct the mistakes of others, no matter how noble it would be.

I guess how I feel is "Why would he want it". You can go buy the gold and make one yourself that means as much, because he knows in his heart that he did not earn it.

Every time he looks at it, he will know that the other guy really did score higher and had his score cut....

I am not saying that there is any rule that he should do it....but why not just do the right thing?

To him, it is meaningless.

Disputed, tarnished and frustrating perhaps, but not meaningless.

Not at all.

I am not one of those single minded fans that can't accept that their team does not win everything in sight. I do actually have a very healthy appreciation for good football whoever plays it. So if Arsenal and Chelsea run away with the league then so be it.

Very refreshing!

I know too many people who support Man U, and after the last 13 years, thay take winning/success/trophies as their given right. As a Swindon Town fan myself you learn to enjoy success as it happens so rarely. ;)

There are quite a few retired players crippled with arthritis, not helped by the pain killing injections they were given to get them through games when they were carrying an injury.

I think medical treatment is better now...............time will tell!
