A curious aroma greets your senses as you approach the door to the shop. An old, weatherbeaten sign tilts from its moorings above the gnarled oak of the door, in which you can almost make out some menacing faces. You dismiss the uncomfortable feeling and proceed, and you hear an old fashioned jingle as the door swings open.

Inside, the first thing you notice is that the place is a mess. Books, papers, glass instruments are strewn all around, on every level surface: floor, tables, shelves. A narrow path leads inward, where you encounter Paracelsus, the proprietor. He is bent over an alembic producing a prodigious amount of smoke, and you know immediately where the strange aroma came from.

A dusty sign propped against one wall reads:

ALCHEMIST
Inquire within to procure tinctures, ointments, suffumigations, and many other medicaments. Special orders are welcomed. We are available to discuss novel experiments which might expand the Science of Alchemy. Magical operations require a substantial service fee.
NOTA BENE: Any Philosopher's Stones produced in this Laboratory will remain the property of the Proprietor, and will not be offered for sale.

You ponder what it is that you want to request from the old magician . . .

Reminds me of a game I was in; a friend found a magic sword, and it could talk, but only to him. We couldn't hear the sword talk, but we could hear his replies to the sword...made for an interesting session... ^_^

Absolutely. Though let me point out a mere technicality: people are enchanted, weapons are consecrated. The most effective magical weapons are made by the owner, and never allowed to be seen except when the other is the target.

We can provide the metal stock, wooden and leather forms for the grip, the forge, and the turning stone for sharpening. After completion of the weapon, we can provide you a choice of ritual consecrations, depending on your needs and wishes.

Well, now. You certainly have placed a most unusual and, hmmm... shall we say. . . hmmm... challenging order. Seems what you are describing is in fact an astral weapon. Very powerful, yes, very powerful. But such a weapon cannot possibly be made by another for you. We can coach you in the construction of such a sword. Interesting. But it will require enormous discipline on your part to craft it. A tremendous amount of practice focusing the mind. You must first become proficient in meditation. You must become so skilled in the meditative art that you can actually accomplish a visual hallucination at will. And then to meet your specific order, you will further have to create a visual hallucination of darkness, even more difficult. So you see, this is a very difficult thing you ask. But not impossible. I know what must be done to create such a thing, even though I have never done it. I can tell you how to do it, but the dedication to the task may be far beyond anything you imagine. If you have this committment, we can proceed.

But you must also be aware, should you choose to proceed, you will be flirting with intelligences and entities that many consider to be dangerous even to name. It would not be right to proceed without informing you of this.

OOC: This is not just being spooky. What I offer is as valid as any source of occult knowledge. As the IC alchemist said, I have never done such a thing, nor do I have any such interest, but I will be happy to tell you what to do, IC or OOC.

*enter the Traveller - browses a bit, examining various odds and ends, fetishes, jars and bottles of whatnot. Finds one small phial of a slightly green hue. Without opening it he carefully waves the vessel under his nose and tries to capture the aroma*

"Excuse me. What is this? It has an aroma I can't place, although it conjours a distant memory of ... something ... familiar ...Mmmm?"

" Why I came in was I am after a phial of 'Velvet Rain'. I have not been able to find it in this part of the world. Do you have some? Or can you get some for me?"
