Looking back I have to say that the benifits of sitting still and focusing on one objective did wonders for my concentration. Not that I ever became very good at chess, but for me, ultimately, that wasn't the point.

And yet, dear Hazel, your attention span is still equivalent to a rodents'. :eyes:

Did I just say that? More importantly, when did I get in here? *Looks around, shrugs and continues to look for nothing in particular* You know, I would like to challenge you to a game of chess one of these days.

Yes! I feel the love...

Well, perhaps Vince can arrange for us to use a table and chess set... :glare:

Actually, for what it's worth htz and CR, when I think about it, probably the most unusual board game that I know is chess.

Hazel, I love chess. . .love it so much I got my wife a cheese set for her birthday. . . .okay, she said she wanted it. Really, Honestly, Truly. Unfortunately, I tried teaching her after she had had a truly hellacious day at work and has refused to play since then. Ah, well, live and learn

That's very unfortunate. Perhaps we can convince her otherwise? I mean, it's really very fun. Maybe you ought to intentionally lose the first few times when you go to teach her again. ;)

Well, I can see her frustration with learning chess especially if you're a good player...
I'm trying to teach my son to play and he isn't too thrilled with mom winning, but I don't want to let him win all the time. How can you learn that way?

I'm really not that good, but I'm always plotting and planning moves. . . .I was raised with the idea that you learn how to play by losing. This was reinforced to me by my Nono, who taught me the joys of truly strategic checkers. Beat the old man only twice, but both times he was prouder than me than I was of winning the game.

It's more the getting to know how the pieces move the first few times someone plays it. If they don't win, what's the point of learning? Not everyone is willing to sacrifice time to lose just to be better at something anymore. Having taught several people how to play myself, I think letting them win until they get the hang of it, then using more advanced strategies is one of the better ways to get someone motivated to kick yer butt. :D

Now checkers is just a mystery to me... All those identical red or black colors...I think checkers would be a much harder game for me.

I agree with your learning strategy though, It makes the eventual victory all the sweeter. :)

I'm with Hazel on that one. Checkers is beyond me. I never did understand why you couldn't take pieces just because they were on the edge of the board... :P

BIRC1
Preventing Cell Death

Walking in the front door brings back fond memories of a trip in Junior High to "the big city" to buy my first set of dice. Those were the days -- five guys and I staying up late on the weekends, plotting ways to outsmart the DM and eating all the pizza and coke our parents could provide.... *Sigh*

Hey Vince, nice place. I run the book store down the street and was wondering if you have any suggestions for a gift that I'd like to give to a really great employee. He runs the graphic novel section and helps out with lots of extra stuff without being asked. Any thoughts?

Would you also be interested in setting up some discounts or other incentives for our employees to shop at each other's store? I think that it would be good business for both of us. Let me know what you think. I'll set aside a copy of Richard Bach's, The Bridge Across Forever for you or your wife as it addresses chess and relationships in an interesting way. DWC gave me a copy about 10 years ago.

Removes a chess set for Hazel and Yulia. Ladies, if you'd like a game, there's a table right over there. Points to an open table, far from the Magic: The Gatheirng players who, well, rather smell.

BIRC, let me see, let me see. Pondering, pondering. Ah, you could advance order GW's Codex: Witchhunters. It looks like a good addition to 40K and the models, besides the ones that are, well, half-pornographic, look pretty cool. Of course, knowing comic book guys, he probably likes the half-nekkid Sisters Repentia.

And, yes, I think we shuld arrange store discounts for our employees. That would be a darned good incentive.

Looks at Fudgie's evil grin Sink the Queen, eh? After I'm off work, Fudgie, I'll set up a tbale and bring out a botle of Jack Daniels and we can work on that queen

* Thank you, Vince*

Yulia and I find the upwind table and begin setting up the board with the usual argument about what color the square in the corner should be...

Then we begin chatting on about the latest fashions, drawing death stares from the pungent roleplayers...

*Yulia sits and ponders what Hazel has been smoking in order to hear her words as fashion tips.* I might point out that I said nothing about six inch heels or miniskirts. But, of course, I've got this feeling that you're brain will twist my words so that I have been all along, simply because I said "six inch heels" and "miniskirt"

*Looks back at the angry-glarers and grins right back* Then again...

Vince covers his head and pounds it agains the counter. Don't those two know that most of my customers have never had a chance with a girl in 6 inch heels and a miniskirt? My God, I can imagine half of those Magic geeks running right to the bathroom. Oh, God, I'm really gonna have to scrub that room down tonight!

*Oh Vince we're not wearing outfits like that, we must have been overheard discussing what Yulia wants to wear to the prom this year. Oh and I had better look for my copy of Cosmo... on second thought if you find it please don't tell me...* :D

Just discussing outfits like that is enough to set those guys off, Hazel. Shit, Cosmo. . . . . oh, God, that is going to be a tough job. I remember that time Aaron brought in the Victoria's Secrets Catalogue. Had to repaint the room that night. Remember, these guys are gamers. They live in a world of imagination.

Curious that the roleplaying games never really caught on with girls. We certainly have the imagination... My Barbies were quite adventurous...maybe there has to be some shopping involved for D&D style games to catch on with us...

Thats why I had mentioned the RPG Arcanum. It actually has stores to shop from besides all of the dungeons and monsters to clear out and the like.

I think it has to do with the smell and the general social ineptitude of roleplayers when they first start out. . . .and a good system will allow a little social interaction. I mean, my thieves always cased out a few stores before, um, er, liberating their wares.

Of course, the best role-playing I had was when the party was playing cards. My PC was just drinking, so I got to play an NPC. As one memebr kept arguing with the DM, I gradually stoll his entire pot of money. When my victim said, "Doesn't he have to roll for it?" the DM replied, "He just took it and you didn't notice. I'd say that works as a successful theft."

Incidently, LARPing (Live Action Role-Playing) has a good number of female participants. Less hack-n-slah, more interaction and character development.

Vince thinks for a minute. . . .maybe I should sponsor a World of Darkness LARP one night

So the chess game ends in a tie or draw, I guess. (really did)

Yulia and I get up to stretch our legs and go for a walk outside.

*I think later on a rematch is in order, don't you?*
