Sharapova Makes No.1 Return

MELBOURNE, Australia - At the beginning of Day 7 at the Australian Open, there was a three-woman battle for the No.1 ranking between Maria Sharapova, Amélie Mauresmo and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Midway through Sunday's play, after a couple of stunning upsets, that heated battle had been won. Maria Sharapova will regain the world No.1 spot on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Singles Rankings on Monday, January 29.

By reaching the fourth round here, Sharapova – a semifinalist in Melbourne last year – had overtaken current No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne, who is not in Melbourne to defend her 2006 runner-up points. That left defending champion Mauresmo and current world No.4 Kuznetsova to contend with, but with the Frenchwoman and her fellow Russian both being upset in their fourth round matches on Sunday, Sharapova is assured of a No.1 return immediately following the Australian Open.

Mauresmo's only chance to return to No.1 relied on her progressing deep into the second week and Sharapova losing before the final; the world No.3's fourth-round loss to Lucie Safarova erased that hope. Kuznetsova, who lost to Shahar Peer shortly after Mauresmo bowed out, had an outside shot at her first No.1 ranking if Sharapova lost in the fourth round and if she went on to win the title.

Sharapova – currently ranked No.2 – spent seven non-consecutive weeks at No.1 in her career between August and October 2005. The US Open champion's return to the top spot will be the 67th exchange of the No.1 ranking since computer standings were introduced in November 1975.

the new ranking is

1 M. SHARAPOVA
2 J. HENIN-HARDENNE
3 A. MAURESMO
4 K. CLIJSTERS
5 S. KUZNETSOVA
6 M. HINGIS
7 N. PETROVA
8 E. DEMENTIEVA
9 N. VAIDISOVA
10 J. JANKOVIC
