Jay Sean is relatively new on the scene and he's hard to categorise. He's incredibly charming, well spoken, intelligent and of course...astonishingly good looking and is happily riding high on the Asian music wave which he shares with the likes of Panjabi MC, Juggy D and Rishi Rich. Mixing Asian influences - Bhangra and traditional instruments - with gorgeous R&B, a heavy dose of rap and a touch of beatbox and he loves to get his talented friends involved too'. He turned up at the Hip Hop Happening with Juggy D and Mentor. Mentor, Jay Sean and Juggy D with our Urban Myths reporters Josika and Tahir The boy himself - who claims to be a 'only sings in the shower' kinda guy who was discovered at a Karaoke night is currently hot footing it around the country having the time of his life promoting his single 'Eyes on You' and a forthcoming album. We wanted to know if he always harboured secret desires to be a pop sensation: "Well yeah, I've always loved singing but it wasn't realistic. It was a far-off dream. I guess I always wanted it but I always worked hard at school, you gotta be clever too you know!" So did school help with the 'plan'? "Well I started writing my own lyrics when I was about 13, I guess the poetry sessions in English class may have helped. I learned a bit about music at school mostly as a hobby though, piano and ermmm...the recorder. Yeah, yeah...the recorder!!! It's an integral part of hip hop you know!" How about Jay's style, has that changed over the years? "I've always loved rapping and I've stuck to the fast pace but I think my subjects have changed with me. I just write about life and what's going on in my head. I don't like to get too heavy though you know. The thing about UK rap is that it can get so gloomy and focus on the griminess of life. I try to keep it light with witty rhymes. If I'm feeling thoughtful I'll write something conscious, it's all from the heart you know. Originally from London Jay Sean whose real name is Kamaljit (no surprise to the fans), has put a burgeoning medical career on hold for the time being. He was in his second year of uni when fame came knocking. A straight-A student with top marks in A'levels too he's put medicine back in the cabinet and is focusing on the music for the time being. So how did his parents react? "I have a bit of a joke in my song 'Me Against Myself' but I'm being light hearted. My parents have been so supportive. Mum and Dad listen to my new songs when they're driving round in the car. Mum's always telling her friends "That's my son", you know she's really proud. I couldn't do this with my whole heart if I didn't have them looking out for me. It's important to be honest with yourself about what you want to do and then to be honest and brave enough to talk to your parents about it. I definitely don't pick up any musical skills from my folks though, well apart from my grandad maybe but he's only musical when he's had a couple of drinks!" So if it wasn't the family who inspired him who was it: "Growing up on a diet of R&B, soul and hip hop. Back in the day the people who were about were Naughty by Nature, Laws of the Underground Tribal Quest...that's who set me off, all good stuff and still standing the test of time!" Jay had time ok read dis makhiii |
