Fat nose, long and untidy hair and bouncy feet, Shah Rukh Khan, which literally means 'man with the face of a king', is as popular as ever as he completes 13 years at the helm of affairs in Bollywood Sunday The star with unconventional looks, who was noticed for his restless energy, rapid-fire speech, confidence and passion for acting, celebrates his 38th birthday amid a revived, robust box-office status. After 49 films in 13 years, he has proved once again with the Aziz Mirza-directed Chalte Chalte that he is the Baadshah , even with a titanium disc inserted in his spine. More than a decade after he moved to Mumbai-based Hindi film industry to pursue an acting career, he boasts of a signature range of perfumes, SRK, by Paris-based Jeanne Arthes and enjoys top-of-mind recall among Indians worldwide. "Bollywood has invested a staggering Rs 1 billion on the reigning superstar," say trade analysts. "Little wonder then that his chronic back problem is a cause of worry for the entire trade." Some opine that the amount would have been greater had he not taken a break to get his back operated. The audience still swoons every time he flashes that dimpled smile, and for many non-resident Indians he is god. "When Shah Rukh was in Britain for a spinal disc surgery, Bollywood had its heart in its mouth. Hopes from him shot up further when a modest film like Chalte Chalte turned out to be a runaway success," says M.Padhye, manager of one of the oldest theatres of Mumbai. "Films like Devdas and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge ran to full houses even in the second run. This is probably because the actor ensures he leaves his individual stamp on every role he does," Padhye adds. Four big movies starring Shah Rukh are due to be released over the next 12 months. Top producers and directors heaved a collective sigh of relief when he returned mid-June and virtually went straight to the sets. Says director-producer Karan Johar: "His back gives him much more pain than he lets anyone know. His back pain is supposed to go away with time -- we hope that happens." Komal Nahata, editor of Film Information, says a Shah Rukh film costs anything from Rs 150 million to Rs 300 million. Hopes are running high for Karan Johar's maiden production -- Kal Ho Na Ho -- directed by his former assistant Nikhil Advani. The film co-stars Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan. Shah Rukh is currently shooting for close friend and choreographer-turned-director Farha Khan's debut that pits Khan against the statuesque Sushmita Sen. The film is aptly titled Main Hoon Na .Shah Rukh also stars in Yash Chopra's and Aditya Chopra's new films. By making it big in movies, Shah Rukh, who started his acting career with serials like Fauji and Circus , choreographed the most successful transition to the silver screen. Certain over enthusiastic supporters like film financier Bharat Shah, who made the blockbuster Devdas with Shah Rukh, says there is no other contender for his megastar status barring Aamir Khan. He believes Shah Rukh can remain number one for at least another 10 years if his health supports him. Shah, who has made six movies with the actor, says that professionalism, sheer commitment and single-minded dedication make Shah Rukh stand apart. He has also diversified into making movies and floated his own production house -- Dreamz Unlimited -- with friend Juhi Chawla. Dreamz, however, made a double-dud debut: Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Asoka . Chalte Chalte , however, rewrote the script. In spite of the sea-facing bungalow, an apartment and an office in Mumbai, real estate in New Delhi and two BMWs, his confidants say at heart he is still a middle-class boy |
