After a while, you can pretty much understand the general jist of a conversation by picking up on key words that you know. I supose so. I imagine you'd have to watch a lot of it.

It depends on what it is you're watching and how developed of a story it is. You'll pick up a lot more by watching full length films than by watching crappy stuff like Hamtaro.

Japanese is a very difficult language to learn because it does not have direct translation to English; you basically have to get the general idea of what the statement in Japanese would amount to in English.
