In every society, there must be rules to be followed by it's citizens to ensure an open and free discussion. There must be a group of people that ensure that these rules are respected by these citizens. Forums basically follow this model of society, having it's citizens and mods. There are rules for posting content and conduct for members. Mods and admins, however, do not have rules that guide their decisions and conduct - bannings, promotions, and the like. These rules for mods and admins are inferred, but are not written for general understanding and debate. In order to create a more perfect forum (lol), mods and admins should abide by a written code of rules, which are meant to guide their action and conduct as mods/admins. This code should be drawn up by the mods and admins, but shaped and created through tempered understanding and good sense, free of unjust biases. Members of the forum must also be involved in this process, to help close the gap between members and mods/admins. This code of rules can be seen as a collective agreement of just powers that are recognized as such by members. The code shall hopefully solve these problems, potential and real: 1. Bans without cause for unjust behavior/actions. 2. A lack of concrete and organized agreement as to what powers a mod/admin shall have and act by, and by to what degree. 3. Members feel unprotected by their natural rights as members of a community, not certain as to the limits of mods/admins who have no guidelines as to what will necessitate the use of their powers. 4. A lack of a definite idea as to what traits makes a good mod/admin. I please ask that the mods and admins of this forum consider this suggestion - for a fun forum to be in, enjoyed by everyone, free of unneeded worry. :) If the code is to be accepted by the mods and admins, then a following discussion may take place in the general discussion subforum. And if you didn't catch all that, I'm truly sorry. (Basic gist - rules for mods/admins to go by, just as the members have rules in which they abide by. And a following discussion as to the consideration of this code, and a discussion/debate as to the contents if this code is accepted.) |

well i have to say, i cannot word it better. you guys do have members rights like appeal, right to a hearing etc. (like the US constitution) I do feel that this outline might be the best way of measuring the powers of the mods and admins here, like what they can and cannot do. I also like about the fact about CONCRETE evidence. I hate the fact that some people dont use concrete evidence and use the "cause i said so" excuse. So basically, if any members here want to add anything to their rights, feel free to post, and the mods and admins will decide if they are appropriate. |

To be honest, I wasn't thinking about the US. Government and things. xDD Oh well. It's a model, for better or for worse. I'll wait for questions... if no one doesn't quite get it. :o |

I honestly just think you're just making it more complicated than it really is. D: I find it funny that a forum this small has problems running itself. Pro tips from the Stranger:  Users prefer adminstators/moderators who are personable over online Gestapos. People on the Internet like to have fun and don't want to be threatened with a ban every five minutes just because they crack a joke. However, if the user is being outright racist/nazist/sexist/abusive/homophobic or making the community uncomfortable, don't be afraid to step in. Be clear of where the line goes. Don't assign immature members or wanna-be trolls for staff/moderators. Moderators should have good reputation on the board. The Stranger have the following suggestions: 1) The adminstrator let the community suggest moderator candidates or 2) The adminstrator suggests moderator candidates. Either way. Listen to suggestions from your community's opinions, but DO NOT let them take over the board. Picking favourites - don't do it. You're not obligated to like every user on your boards, but be fair. Too tired to write moar. |

lolz... stranger what my point is that here in this forums, its a democracy... in a sort of a way.... anyhow, members do have the right to petition and vote in what decisions we make or yours. however, there might be some important stuff implemented that do not require the members votes |

No corrupt dictators, peoples. Please. *reminded of a quote*
All power corrupts. Absolute power is kinda cool...
(A book, called Furry Logic. Go find it in a bookstore!) And I think that all above said (sans, perhaps, the whole dictatorship thing XD) is good. I agree that there should be some sort of written staff code, although the readability of Silverpine's current written post is... well, to be blunt, it reminded me of my World History textbook. Certain points are quite boring, but the stories (aka content) is interesting XD. Um, did I miss anything I wanted to say? |

lol well forums have a lot more problems than a forums that is run like a goverment. sometimes, forums fall apart because of a bad leader who is absolute and will not allow any members to have a say |
who says its a dictatorship? Im promoting democracy here
O ha, funny. XD The only thing I'm worried about are mods in the cbox, although it's kinda unrelated to the subject. I think we should start encouraging people to use the Print Screen button a little more often when it comes to mods kicking or banning users, and I can name a certain user who has been going through that quite often. XD
lol well forums have a lot more problems than a forums that is run like a goverment. sometimes, forums fall apart because of a bad leader who is absolute and will not allow any members to have a say
I can testify to that. I've seen it happen twice. One administator in particular I had worked with previously had banned two staff members on his forum. Why? Those two members were posting a couple of suggestions on how to improve the board's layout, contradicting the poor efforts made by the admin. Ironically, the last remaining two staff members retired and the board lost activity. I had to close down the board. XD |

I was once the only member of a site like that. It was reeeaaaallly boring. |

Even though I'm still a new member, I'd like to stick my head in and beg for mercy if << insert name of person smarter than me >> realizes my stupidity. I think that the idea of having some "guidelines" for members with more powers (i.e., admins, mods), is a must for any growing forum. I am in no way advocating a long, long, constantly growing list of increasingly obscure rules and regulations and punishments and whatnot. Actually, at a place I've been on for a while - Wikipedia, don't laugh at me, but it's as much a community as an encyclopedia - some of the problems are, IMHO, the excessive lists of policy (as well as the sort of clique of sysops and higher ranking people, but that 'ruling cabal' problem doesn't feel like such a problem here, even if 'dictatorship' is viewed as a problem by some in this forums). Well, basically, a little opinion of mine (and food for thought) is that lots of formal procedures and policy are simply not efficient, but guidelines are always necessary. Another opinion of mine is that de-sysoping (or rather, temp/permanent removal or restriction of moderator powers) should be accepted by each member being "promoted" to a higher position with more power as a very real possibility should they abuse their status. I like Stranger's idea of having the general community nominate mod candidates. A good moderator has to have good relationships with everyone. That decreases negative feelings and general discord on forums. But beware of a seriously excessive load of candidates - five candidates a week might work on Wikipedia, but not here. Though having a higher-up nominate a member and having the community offer opinions on it is also a working idea - I've seen it work (and it's still working, in fact) on a large fan-forum I used to haunt. Tl;dr anyone? |
