The breaching charge ripped a gaping hole in the wall of the command center, taking down five enemy soldiers immediately. Before any of the others had time to react, nearly ten more had been taken down by coordinated fire from Echo Squad. The rest didn't last long.

"Behind you, LT!" yelled one of the men. The lieutenant spun and squeezed off a shot into a tech behind a control panel. Groaning, the man slid to the ground, his hand sliding off a panel of buttons.

The lieutenant walked over to the man's station. "Goddammit," he said, "he got a message off. So much for a stealth operation. Let's get to work."

While his men spead out, the lieutenant surveyed the carnage. Twenty soldiers, ten technicians all lay in crimson pools around the control room. Some slumped over consoles, some spread-eagle on the floor, but all dead. His team was ruthless. Efficient too; not one body had more than three shots in it -- two in the chest, one in the head. There wasn't much collateral damage either. The team had been taught to minimize stray rounds. It avoided friendly fire and left more around for salvage.

A call from one of his men caught his attention. "Lieutenant, I've hacked into their system security. We can get the launch codes and disable the missiles, but the system is pretty complex. It'll take a while to disable all of them."

Another commando looked up from his console. "Sir, there's something else. It looks like some of their other bases are sending up bombers. From what I can tell, their target coordinates are in Independent Planets. I think we can upload some of the launch codes into their onboard computers -- it'll help divert them from our cities, but it'll tell them to drop their bombs right back here. Plus, once we enter a code, the computer won't take it twice. So we can either divert the bombers or stop the missiles...or some of both."

"Roger that," said the lieutenant, frowning. He hoped never to make this kind of decision. It was hard enough to do with soldiers in a squad, but for whole cities...

"Enter half the codes for the nukes," said the lieutenant finally. "How many bombers do the rest let us stop?"

"For a flight of 40...about half that."

"Do it. And radio Command about the situation. Hopefully they'll be able to set up some kind of defense."

CHW let me remind you of a policy called MAD.

Mutual assured destruction (MAD) is a doctrine of military strategy and national security policy in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by two opposing sides would effectively result in the destruction of both the attacker and the defender. The MAD doctrine assumes that each side has enough nuclear weaponry to destroy the other side and that either side, if attacked for any reason by the other, would retaliate with equal or greater force. The expected result is an immediate escalation resulting in both combatants' total and assured destruction. It is now generally hypothesized that the nuclear fallout or nuclear winter resulting from a large scale nuclear war would bring about worldwide devastation.

MAD meant that nuclear nations either had first strike or second strike capability. A nation with first strike capability would be able to destroy the entire nuclear arsenal of another nation and thus prevent any nuclear retaliation. Second strike capability indicated that a nation could uphold a promise to respond to a nuclear attack with enough force to make such a first attack highly undesirable.

Back in Independent Planets, the Executive Bunker was a flurry of activity. Chief Executive Douglas sat perusing through a stack of papers, occasionally stopping to organize the dozens of memos and reports arriving on his desk. This most recent paper was the text of Crazy Hell for War's ultimatum to Trecdom. Mad drivel, like most of their releases, but backed up by an army it was as serious as any respectable nation's.

"Chief Douglas!" The exclamation brought Douglas's head up from his work in time to see General Cook stride through the door, scowling. The man never seemed cheerful, but this time the look on his face could have repelled a bear.

"What is it, General?" asked Douglas.

"Sir, we've just been contacted by Echo Squad from inside CHW. The first missile base was taken, but the opfor managed to get out a message to their president. They report twenty stealth bombers en route to Saint Francis."

"Did they manage to disable any of the nukes?"

The general's frown deepened. "Only five sir. They used the rest of the launch codes to divert another twenty bombers back to the base."

"Twenty bombers..." Douglas sighed and rubbed his temples. What a day. "All right," he said after a moment, "scramble all available fighters. Tell our AA crews to fire blind; they won't be able to pick up stealth planes and there won't be any aiming systems to jam. And get our emergency alert activated. We need to get as many people out of harm's way as we can."

General Cook nodded, saluted, and turned on his heel to leave. "One more thing," added the Chief Executive, and Cook stopped. "How many ships are in ES range?"

"Just one, sir...the Goshawk."

"Call it into orbit. We need an ace up our sleeve."

Douglas watched the general go before turning back to his work. He tried to keep reading, but found himself distracted. Why? They were perfectly safe in the Bunker, a remnant of one of Independent Planets's first governments enhanced and constantly updated with the latest technology. No one knew where it was, though there were plenty of rumors. It was entirely self-contained, and many experts were convinced it could withstand the Apocalypse itself, though the Chief Executive himself hoped that would never be tested.

No, it was something else. Concern for the citizens? Yes, but not just that. When Douglas had commissioned the spacefleet, he had intended it as protection against interstellar threats, not terrestrial ones. The railguns on board were far too powerful against unshielded targets; to bombard a country with them might be tantamount to genocide. But to stop a genocide...it might be the only way.

Trecdom Sea

As the fifth fleet approached home waters they noticed a carrier sitting just outside territorial waters. It was flying the colors of the Greenspoint Navy. A quick check of the alliances showed them to be a neutral third party. As such they were well within their rights to be in the area. However should they enter territorial waters uninvited they would be watched carefully. Hopefully cooler heads would prevail and a peace treaty could be signed but if not, the fifth fleet was ready to force peace upon CHW.

The subs hung back while several surface vessels moved in towards the shore in an attempt to intimidate CHW ships. When that failed a barrage of Naval Strike Missiles were fired at the battleship carrier. Cheers went up from the crews as a massive fireball came up from the ship before it sank beneath the waves. With that out of the way, a massive search was started for the unknown number of submarines stalking the waters. They had already sunk or damaged 26 ships and Naval Command wasn't about to let more ships fall prey.

Off:

Updated numbers:

11 Virgina Class Submarines
25 Los Angeles Class Submarines
14 Ticonderoga Class Cruisers
20 Spruance Class Destroyers
8 Type 45 Destroyers
22 Arleigh Burke Destroyers
2 Nimitz Class Carriers
6 Type 23 Class Frigates
36 La Fayette class frigates
21 Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates

We are quite willing to sign a ceasefire just not a punitive "treaty." :sith

Ignoring the nukes. Otherwise the war would end in nuclear holocaust with everyone on both sides dead. Besides the New Alamo has a very advanced missile defense system. You wouldn't be able to take it out.

On Board the New Alamo Space Station

Sensor technician 1c Amos Johnson sat bolt upright in his control couch as the monitors at his station began to blink a bright blood red. The klaxon that began to sound at the same instant helped to jerk the young man into alertness. Duty with the multi-national force manning the Texas Star Wars Missile Defense System was usually pretty dull. It seemed that the crazy man in charge of the aptly named Crazy Hell for War had different ideas.

Voices began to urgently yet calmly chatter through his headset.

"Control, sensor 2, we read multiple launch signatures"
"Confirmed, control, sensor 3 also reads multiple launches"
"Can you confirm sensor 1?"

Johnson calmly double checked the icons and read outs on his monitor. "Confirm control, sensor 1 is picking up multiple launches." An icon flashed and new data flashed on his monitor. "Control, sensor 1, now making it thirty plus signatures lifting from within Texas territory."

"Control, sensor 3 counts a total of forty two signatures."
"Control, sensor 2, I'm showing two of the signatures are deviating course, breaking off from the others."

Johnson watched his monitor and tapped icons trying to coax more information from his sensor equipment. He peered at it closely.

"Control, sensor 1, now make it a total of forty-five missiles in boost phase, five are going for high orbital insertion points, estimate the rest targeted at Trecdom."

"Sensor 1, confirm and verify impact coordinates"

Johnson tapped more icons and watched as the computer calculated trajectories and velocities from the sensor data. He frowned as some of the numbers seemed off. He reached over and tapped a few more commands into the computer, and read the output. His eyes widened at what he read.

"Control, sensor 1, confirm forty targets in boost phase will land within the borders of Trecdom, estimated impact coordinates being uploaded to you now." Johnson tapped a command. "Further confirm five targets in boost phase targeting orbital installations, including New Alamo." He looked again at the data. "Time to impact New Alamo three minutes." Johnson could feel his heart beating a bit faster as the reality of that sunk in and the adrenaline began to flow.

"Understood, Sensor 1, New Alamo is target. Weapons Control, confirm target lock on missiles."
"Control, Weapons, lasers at full charge, tracking targets, system lock in thirty seconds."
"Weapons, Control, missiles targeting New Alamo highest priority."
"Understood control, do we have clearance to fire?"
"You have clearance to fire, say again, you are weapons free and may engage targets at will."

Johnson watched his monitor, not realizing he'd held his breath. Like all the other technicians in the Missile Shield team, his control station was deep in the core of the large space station. He had no view port, couldn't see out at the awesome vista of the planet below him. He almost felt disappointed at not being able to watch the action, even though he knew that the lasers were invisible to the eye, and the missiles were too far away to see.

He was watching for the icons of the missiles to wink out. The ones moving toward New Alamo seemed to show up redder on the screen than the others, though he knew that couldn't be. He glanced at the timer on those icons. They showed less than two minutes to impact. Weapons control had said they'd have lock in thirty seconds. Why hadn't they fired yet?

The whole point of the system which took up a full 1/4 of the huge Texas Space Station was to protect the region from this very sort of thing. Granted it was meant to protect from outside threats, but it could easily handle missiles launched from inside Texas as well. Still, they should have--

"Control, Weapons, we have lock. Firing."

The light level dimmed slightly in Johnson's control station as the large mutli-megawatt lasers fired their beams of coherent light at the missiles reaching up toward them. Unseen, the beams lanced down into the upper stratosphere and played across the shells of the approaching missiles. Those shells were constructed of composite steel ceramics, to withstand the shock of launch and reentry, but they couldn't stand up to the power of the beams being projected at them. One by one each of the five missiles was touched by the beam, and in turn, they all exploded, the very atoms and molecules of their structure being split by the power of the laser.

Johnson started to breath again as the first hostile red icon of an incoming missile vanished. By the time the fifth was gone his heart seemed to have regained its normal pace.

"Control, weapons, targets inbound on New Alamo eliminated. Switching to secondary targets."

Johnson continued to watch as again, in ones and twos, hostile missiles were blotted out of the sky high over the Texas Sea by the powerful lasers of the Texas Star Wars Missile Defense System. He blinked as he realized all of the missiles were gone from his monitor. He tapped some commands to put his station back into overwatch mode.

"Control, weapons, all targets eliminated."
"Control to all stations, well done people. Let's keep an eye out for more. The mess down there isn't over yet."

Johnson leaned back in his control couch and went back to the dull boredom of routine duty.

The missile had fail to destroy the space station.
In the Private jet...

"Damn it. Alright this is what we gonna do...."

"The plan is simple. First we will launch multiple missile. like 70 missile. 30 missile will fly in another direction towards the Space station while the rest will be firing from another direction. Soon as it reach space. Then, each missile warhead will split into cluster bomb with nuclear.... Our V1-UAV 2 with intercept the weapons control and platform."

"this is it fire!"

10 V1-UAV intercept the space station. they fly in all four direction. This is to divert the attention. Soon 20 missile intercept the Space station. But were destroyed. More and more missile were intercepting the space station. Until the space station system were overloaded. The missile hit the tip of the space station. And 2 more missile hit the Side of the space station. The Space station exploded in flame.... Other missile remaining is space were directed to attack Trecdom Satellite and IP.

OOC: Sorry CHW, as "moderator" I'm stepping in here. There's no way, at all, ever, you're going to blow up New Alamo. Ain't gonna happen. The control systems on the Texas Star Wars Missile Defense System cannot be overloaded by the number of missiles you can launch.

You went nuclear, the missiles were stopped by the system put in place to do so, and they will continue to be stopped the same way.

Carry on with your conventional weapons.

The skies above Saint Francis were chaos. All twenty bombers from Crazy Hell for War had reached the city and were dropping their payloads on the city below. Commercial jets and helicopters scrambled to avoid the explosions, along with the occasional wayward missile from the defending SAM sites. Most made it.

In the city, citizens screamed as they raced for emergency shelters, subway tunnels, anywhere they could escape the carnage. A good number had been evacuated or sheltered before the bombing started; only a few thousand were still aboveground. As frightened queues of people funneled through concrete-and-steel doorways, several loud roars overhead brought their eyes to the sky. Fighters from the nearby airbase raced into view, firing guns and missiles at the enemy. Bomber after bomber burst into flame and exploded, either from precision strikes from the fighters or lucky hits from the SAMs. Molten metal rained down as all twenty bombers were eliminated. Their job done, the fighters turned back to base as the surviving citizens cheered.

A few hours later, Chief Executive Douglas sat in the Executive Bunker reading a summary of the attack. All bombers destroyed, all fighters accounted for - both excellent news. But he had to grimace when he saw the casualty list. Four hundred people dead, another fifteen hundred wounded, not to mention the millions, perhaps billions of credits of damage to Saint Francis. The capitol buildings were thankfully spared with minimal damage, but downtown had been thoroughly bloodied.

Douglas's intercom beeped. "Yes, what is it?" he asked.

"Sir, we've received word that CHW has ordered a nuclear strike on the New Alamo," said the tech at the other end.

If he hadn't been before, Douglas was now convinced that the president was completely nuts. "I assume the attack failed?" he asked.

"Yes sir. Not one missile made it past their defenses."

This action, while not totally unexpected, was certainly an act of desperation on CHW's part. It seemed the Trecdom side of things was going better than they hoped. Plus, this would surely be noticed by the Texas leadership. "Excellent," Douglas responded. "Let's hope they've heard that in NewTexas. If we're lucky, CHW will help us get all the allies we need."

"Yes sir," the tech said. "One more thing...the Goshawk has entered orbit."

About time, Douglas thought. "How long to position it over CHW?"

"An hour and a half, sir."

"Do it. And send a message to their president. Let him know that he has an hour and a half to recall all troops and decide on a meeting in Greenspoint. Forward the message to Trecdom and Greenspoint too. They could use some good news."

What is the point of a suicide run if you know the war is going to end soon anyway. Surrender and your forces will be returned unharmed after the ceasefire. If the submarines expended all their ammo before the Kamikaze run they would have been located and destroyed.

If you were on the verge of losing the beach and cut off from reinforcements how were you able to suddenly retake it?

Sorry CHW. I will allow naval losses but not both carriers. A good portion of the ships in the armada are designed for Anti-Submarine Warfare.

"This is Gannet Brooks with an important new bulletin. The interior of Trecdom has now been secured thanks to a last minute push by our brave troops. Enemy forces had broken through the defense lines headed for Tycho city. Their advance was cut short 2 miles into the city when several National Guard units engaged them. Regulars soon arrived and outflanked CHW's troops. Many surrendered and are being held at an undisclosed location. The beach is still being contested but with the inland forces neutralized, Mt Seleya impassable due to a timely avalanche and the Trecdom Navy controlling the water, sources tell us it is only a matter of time until all of Trecdom is once again in friendly hands. As to the purposed peace agreement, it is reported Trecdom officials will accept nothing less than a restoration of pre-war boundaries."

Trecdom Command

"Sir! We have multiple ICBM launches. It appears they've gone all out."

General Troy swore under his breath.
"Get me a trajectory and start the clock."

A large digital clock came online it's red numbers counting down the estimated time before the missiles hit their target.

"Mr. President it's time."

President Knowles and General Troy take out their keys and insert them into the slots. Once turned, they signal the computer to send out an automated launch code that can only be overridden by a direct order.

A second clock, in blue, is started showing ETA for the Trecdom Nuclear Force.

All eyes were on the large screen up front showing current information on the ICBM's trajectory and speed. Suddenly the indicators disappeared. Their destruction was confirmed in time to recall the nuclear force much to the relief of all present.

Back in Crazy Hell for War, Echo Squad was just exiting the base perimeter. A small trail of bodies marked their path from launch control. The lieutenant hustled all his men into cover in the nearby woods, then turned back in time to watch the first recalled bombers drop their payloads.

Barracks and offices exploded into flame as the first bombs hit. Up above, engines screamed as the rest of the planes realized their error and pulled out of their attack runs. Most likely they'd retreat back to their base and resynch their systems. The lieutenant didn't envy the pilots once they were confronted by their superiors, but that was how war worked.

The lieutenant's earpiece crackled. "Echo Squad, this is General Cook. We're pulling you out. The spacefleet will be sending a battleship into orbit and we'd prefer to avoid friendly fire, if it comes to that. Proceed to LZ One for extraction."

"Roger that, general," the lieutenant responded. He paused, then: "Any word on the result of our mission?"

"Affirmative. Twenty bombers made it through to the capital. Heavy damage to the downtown area; no official numbers for civilian casualties, but we estimate a few hundred at least. The nukes seemed to have been diverted from Trecdom to the New Alamo, but they've all been eliminated."

The lieutenant allowed himself a sigh of relief. "Copy. Good news, general. We'll wait for pickup at LZ One. Out."

President Knowles adjusted his tie before the camera's started.

"Residents of Trecdom and Texas. I stand before you to announce that CHW troops have all been driven from Trecdom lands or surrendered to our troops. As we told the CHW government when war broke out, we are not in the habit of starting wars but will end them is provoked. It has been suggested by some that we are planning an invasion of CHW. That is not true! While we have a contingency plan for such an invasion, the military leaders have all agreed it is not needed. Our goal has always been to re-secure our own lands and nothing more. If CHW will agree to a restoration of Pre-War boundaries we will gladly return any and all POW's we have captured in the course of this war."
