The Gala Mid-Winter Adventure and Ball
or

The Unplanned and Ill-Fated Adventure of Baby Boo Bums
or

Cleaning up after Mommy
(an adventure in many partes)

It was a dark and rain day in The Serene Catdom of Claw the Cat. It has been dark and raining for 67 days in a row now - ever since that day. It was a day like any other day, the kittens were out frolicking in the sun playing with balls and bees, the adolescents were in school learning such things as Advanced Catnapping and Macramé with Hairballs. The Royal Guard at the palace was wary of letting the grizzled old Great Dane in to see Queen Claw, but he was so old and hunched over that he did not seem like he could chase his own tail much less harm the beloved Queen. When the wiley "old" dog gained audience with the Queen, he stood up to his full height slowly changing, years peeled away, muscles appeared from nowhere, long glossy black hair replaced his mangy countenance. This was no ordinary Great Dane. This was by all counts a Were-Great Dane and it was huge! The, what-was-once-a-dog creature bellowed at the Queen, "Ano Dominus, Hocus Pocuscum, I cast a Curse on your Kingdom! Day after day of darkness and rain shall fall on The Serene Catdom of Claw the Cat until the Unholy Tail of Dogbert is replaced on his shrine in The Demonic Nation of DoggyDog. If you wish this pox lifted from your nation, you know what to do." With that, and a giant puff of brimstone that made every single cat in the castle sneeze, the Were-Great Dane disappeared. And as mysteriously as the dog departed, the skies darkened over The Serene Catdom of Claw the Cat and a slow miserable rain began.

Queen Claw knew of the Tail of Dogbert, for she had helped take it when she was but a wee princess with a wild streak and a fondness for pranks. It appeared that her youthful transgressions we coming back and threatening her whole Queendom. Initially writing off the dog as a loony, the Queen could not stand the weather after merely two days of dreariness. "I must assemble a party", she thought to herself. But she could not let her citizens know of her involvement in "the deed", well not any of them but her dear and trusted daughter, the Princess Trish, that was her name, but everybody called her Baby Boo Bums. So the Queen called Baby Boo Bums to her chamber to tell her everything, including the plan to create a party of adventurers from the surrounding lands to assist her on a quest to right the land.

Baby Boo Bums was the ultimate combination - she had the purrfect looks, a brilliant mind and a lithe and athletic body that could wrangle out of anything and pull itself on everything. The entire Catdom loved Baby Boo Bums. The task before her was going to be difficult but probably fun, she thought to herself, wondering how to proceed. "First, I need a party of skilled, and, oh what the heck, unskilled, adventurers to go on a mission. That does not sound so hard. We will just go put some posters out. But the part about not being able to tell them the truth about the real mission will be more difficult." Baby Boo paced and scratched and scratched and paced and got quite perturbed about what all this rain was doing to her fur. But she had a couple of treats her ladies-in-waiting left for her and she was back on track and called in the scribe to put her plan in motion. The next morning, exactly one of the following beautifully inscribed posters was delivered to each of the 211 nations of Texas.

<Author's Note>
This is a medieval, fantasy, dungeons & dragons style role-play. Characters can include anything within that multiverse as well as anthropomorphic/zoomorphic animals (i.e. nations like Sweet Furry Kittens or Bearistotle & Hebert). No modern tech will be allowed but magic is fine within reason. There will be a future tech style RP starting in the Space Forum shortly for those so inclined. Have fun!

Two dancing bear cubs wander in, look at the proclamation, realize they cannot read and fall asleep under the table.

Ali

A lone man approaches the guards outside the ballroom doors.
They quickly stop him. "What business do you have here?" they ask, rather sternly.
"I am here for the adventurer's ball"
"Do you have an invitation?" demanded one of the heavily armored guards?
"I do" *whips out the invitation sent to F799.8 "My Lord, Cap'n Ben sought me out and beseeched me to come to your fair queen's assistance."
one of the guards takes the invitation in his hand and studies it itensely, as if trying to detect a forgery of some sort. What kind of people was the queen looking for anyways? Surely she did not want barbarians of this type attending. Think what it would do to the palace property to see someone like this on the grounds! "Very well, Mr. . . .ahhh, I didn't catch your name?"
"You may refer to me as Ali, Prince of the Desert. May I enter now" *inclining his head to the doors behind the guards.
"Just a minute Mr. Ali. . "
"Ali will suffice"
"very well, Just a minute, Ali, the Queen requires us to document the skills and abilities that classify each person as an adventurer, who enter this party. So If I may ask, what makes you so special?"
"Special, well," *pauses to think* "perhaps because I have lived almost completely alone in the desert for many years, does that satisfy your question?"
"If you haven't noticed, Mr. Ali, it's raining here. I highly doubt that that counts as a skill, much less an skill needed by an adventurer in these parts."
"What is going on out here?" asked the princess as she comes out to see what is going on.
"Nothing, M''Lady, we are just doing our job." explained one of the guards.
"Alright, carry on." and with that the princess went back inside.
"Now where were we?" asked the guard. "oh yes, skills. What's yours? besides surviving in the desert?"
"This is." replied a voice from behind them.
"WHAT!?!?!" shouted the guard as he and his companion jumped and spun around to find Ali standing behind them. Glancing at where the man had stood they saw nothing.
"um. . . . . .dissapearing act *writing on his parchment.* you may enter"

"If that's what you want to call it. Thank you. And with that Ali walked into the ballroom.

Ali quietly looks around the nearly deserted ballroom, even the princess has disappeared. All that is here right now, besides himself are the two guards out front and a pair of bears sleeping under a table. perhaps this is a test of some sort. But what is he supposed to do? Does it have something to do with the bears maybe? Or perhaps he is in a room full of ghosts and doesn't realize it. Quielty Ali draws his scimitar, whatever is going on here he will be ready for it.

The bears hear the word "test" and wake up, seeing the unusual man with a pointy hat in the ballroom.
"Who is that?" Bearistotle whispers.
"I have no idea," replies Hebert.
"Did you know we had a test?"
"No, did you?"
They smile graciously at the stranger and begin backing rapidly out of the room, apologizing.
"We didn't know there was a test."
"The Frog ate our homework!"
"We've had the flu and haven't been able to study."
"Our mother will be in touch!"
And with that, the two cubs fled out the door and down a hallway.

Enter The Queen

From the rear of the ballroom, entered a small entourage while a majestic throne was hastily brought in. The Queen plopped down on the throne, dismissed the manservants and whispered somthing to what appeared to be some sort of Head of The Guard. Haaaaack! Snoooooort! Aaaaack! Thus was the entrance of Queen Claw of The Serene Catdom of Claw the Cat!

She sat there in all her regal reagalia and eyed Ali with wonder and suspicion. She also seemed to be waiting for something. "This Ali fellow is some cool cucumber" the Queen muttered to her Maid in Waiting. After several minutes of awkward silence, a disturbance could be heard coming down the hall. It was a disturbance rarely heard in the halls of the palace, for itr was a combination of yelling and giggling and light gutteral growling and more giggling. With a crash and a boom two very large, muscular, strong, handsome, sleek grey cats ran into the ballroom each pulling large chains attached to the largest salmon anyone short of the Queen had ever seen. These two cats barely made the turn with their fishes in tow. Scampering after them were two small bears eyeing, pawing and clawing at the big fish intently. As soon as all were in the ballroom, the door closed behind them, the grey cats gave up their "catch" to the bears and whispered to the Head of the Guard. They departed without a word. The Head Guard announced, "Bearistotle & Hebert, Your Majesty, from The Supremely Fuzzy Realm of Bearistotle and Hebert. And Ali, Prince of the Desert, from The Flying Texan Privateer of F799.".

What a motley crew the Queen thought to herself. "I am Queen Claw", she purred in a most unexpected sing-song yet regal voice. "Thank you to our esteemed guests for the promptness of your arrival. It is nice to see that guests still come when invited. We have made accomodations for you here in the palace. We are expecting others, so until everyone arrives, we will keep details to a minimum to avoid repeating ourself. However, there is no reason to not proceed with your tests since they are individual and do not depend on others. Please enjoy the hospitality of the castle and get some rest tonight for your test will be tomorrow.".

With that, before anyone could say a word, the Queen arose to a height previously unguessed and departed stage left leaving all in semi-stunned silence.

Bearistotle and Hebert continued their scampering out of the castle and home to mom and dad wondering who the heck the two bears impersonating them were.

"Fish?" asked Hebert.

"Erlack-a-pongo!" gagged Bearistotle. "Pass me some chocolate!"

At the front gates, a newcomer appeared.

"I am here to assist Queen Claw in her quest. You will escort me to meet her majesty.....now."

Not surprisingly the guards were falling over themselves to do as she requested.

Darth Chocolate entered quietly from the side, past the understandably distracted guards, unnoticed. He stepped into a hidden alcove of the ballroom, invitation in hand. All eyes were on the Queen, who was leaving the room, guards and sycophants in tow. He took a seat, content to observe until he knew more.

Sir Hannah rode along the packed dirt trail through the forest. He would have his great adventure. He had dared his father’s anger and braved his mother’s tears. He had refused an armed escort but had finally agreed to accept the services of an experienced servant - one Sancho Panza.

His father told him to keep his sword close to hand and to trust no one. His mother had pressed a purse of coins on him for emergencies and reminded him to write home. A grizzled old ranger captain advised him to stay on the old forest trail and to be alert for outlaws.

He was not afraid of outlaws. He was a trained knight. He had his lance and his sword. He was mounted on his faithful steed. Let the outlaws beware!

Small groups of men moved quietly through the forest ahead of him and on either side. Their clothes were dyed green and covered with strips of burlap and bits of vegetation. They were armed with crossbows, daggers and garrotes.

Their orders were simple. Keep out of sight. Protect the boy. Deal with any potential threat. Several bands of outlaws had already died.

A slight figure dressed in black, face hidden within a black hooded cloak, silently watch the strange assortment of creatures enter into the castle. Waiting for the right time to make her entrance and let her presense be known to her mother the Queen and her older sister the Queens favorite. She would go on this adventure and no one would stop her. Her gaze caught sight of two young bears sleeping under the table, and hoped that they would remember her. Its been so long since she had been at the castle

A tall, dark, jackal-like creature sped through the forest on a gold chariot. The invitation he had received mentioned some type of adventure. These were peaceful times in Texas, and he wasn't going to miss out on any action.

A tall and shiny figure appeared off in the distance. He continued until he could make out what it was. Stopping near a shady part of the forest, he got off to take a look at the mystery traveler. It was an armor-covered human riding on horseback. “Lucky he was downwind,” he thought. He noticed the scent of other humans in the same direction and along the path, but he was still a long way off and could not see anyone else other than the strange rider.

He got back on his chariot and took the reins, matching the speed of the rider but keeping some distance between them.

Ali lowers his blade as more and more peopl enter into the ballroom. Glancing towards them he bows slightly and excuses himself to go and check on his camel, and with that walks out of the room.

But soon as Ali was alone from the rest of the group he dissapeared out into the falling rain.
A while later he was in the woods, snuggly resting in a tree watching A chariot silently follow the knight that was passing directly beneath him.
Silently he lept from the bough which he was resting on and landed on his feet.
Out of trees all around him other arab clad warriors silently landed in the soft earth.
"Good evening Sir Hannah. May I escort you the rest of the way in? It is cold and dreary out, I know of a place nearby where we could rest for some time, light a fire and warm up, and eat some venision before finishing our journey. How does this sound?"

after thinking over his ofer a bit more, Ali changed his mind. "perhaps, journeying quickly to the castle would be better. I sense that we my be more needed there, and the sooner the better. I will leave my trusted men here to escort you the rest of the way in, They do not speak english, though they understand it. I shall see you back in the castle soon enough."
and with that Ali strode off into the wood.

Minutes later Ali was back in the castle dry and warm, he qalked quickly back into the ballroom, where he approached the princess. Bowing ever so slightly he inquired as to the nature behind this ball, for not many balls are held for soley adventurers?

"It seems there are more travelers." He knew there were some travelers with the rider, probably hidden, but others appeared suddenly. They were definitely not part of the original group. He stopped his chariot behind a huge tree and got off to have a look. One of them left, leaving the rest behind.

He was at a disadvantage. He could barely see the group ahead. With his abilities, he could detect who and how many were around him using his acute sense of smell and hearing, more than 100 meters away. But this rain was giving him problems. He had to rely on his sight alone, which wasn't very good to begin with.

The group began to move, so he got back on his chariot and followed.

ENTER THE BLACK LION

Lord Greenville studied the parchment as if he expceted it to magically change, as if there were some hidden meaning in the text. News had spread far and wide of the "Kingdom of Eternal Rain" as his subjects had described the faraway land. What puzzled the Lord, however, was why a Midwinter Ball was suddenly planned during such a dreary time.

Alas, the Lord was unable to personally attend, as his own kingdom was plagued with matters that required his immediate attention. In his stead, he decided, he would send out his Captain of the Guard. The Champion of the Kingdom of Green-ville. He would send his famed Black Lion, Arthur Tiberius.

Arthur was a veteran of many wars, and his unquestioned loyalty to Lord Greenville, as well as the kingdom itself, has afforded him a comfortable life at the Lord's left hand. (The Lord, you see, is left-handed, so to be seated at his left hand, rather than the right, is the highest honor afforded in Green-ville.) The Lord decided to send Arthur for twofold reasons: If it indeed was a ball and adventure, then Arthur would get some well-deserved R&R; If it turned to be something else, a trap mayhap, then there would be no one better equipped to handle a situation such as that.

Lord Green-ville's parting words to Arthur were thus: "Remember as always, old friend, not only do you represent myself, you represent my family. Your family. And the entire kingdom. Show the same bravery, loyalty, and honor as you have always shown. However, I need you to find out the true nature of this "ball." Find out what is really going on. Indiscreetly, mind you, don't let them know we are suspicious in any way. I know I can always count on you." "Yes, my Lord", was his reply.

Arthur said goodbye to his wife Mary, his son John and his daughter Evelyn. (All of Lord Greenville's Lion Knights' families are personally looked after by the Lord's personal servants while the Knights are away, they do not want; this trait has made many a knight flock to Lord Greenville's banner.) He put on his armor, the official armor of the Captain of the Guard. His trusty steed, Brimstone, wearing the finest horse armor in the kindgom, awaited his rider. A squire brought Arthur his weapon, the legendary Lion's Claw Lance...just in case. His family sword, named Tiber in reference to his family name, was snug in a sheath in Brimstone's armor, within easy reach of Arthur's left hand (as The Black Lion was also left-handed), in case close quarters combat would be required. Not as renowned as the Lion's Claw, but a very servicable blade. Arthur housed his lance in a similar sheath on the horse's right side, so he wouldn't have to carry it for the entire journey. And with that, horse and rider were on their way, to the Kingdom of Eternal Rain.

The Black Lion was on his way.
