Does anyone believe we can 'defeat' an ideology?

With troops and guns?

As far as I can tell from the example in the Afganistan -Soviet conflict, the y just keep coming one generation after the next.

Iraq is the same pooch screwing in the Desert.

I am beginning to believe that people who desire Liberty must fight for it or they will never have it for themselves. I am sick and tired of hearing about roadside bombs killing our troops.

Some have said, "Aaaahhhh we gottaah fight this war, ya know, so our grandchildren don't haveta fight it later aah". :ermm: :ermm:

BULL-SQUEEZE

If the enemy is a shadow that wears no uniform, if we keep trying to nail Jello to the wall My Kids and Grandkids may see themselves drafted and fighting there too. Selective service registration is still compulsory in this country.

Some have also said "Ahhahh if we leave then aaaaaaaaaahh so many could be killed....."

If a war is not worth being won by using all means necessary then we should not even bother.

My thoughts are, get the F out. Close our borders here at home. Use terrible deadly retaliatory response without puting boots on the ground ever again except peace keeping or humanitarian missions.

BTW can I get a Bull Squeezing emoticon? :o  :)

I agree on the perseverance if not the nuclear war heads.

Firstly I think that we will have a responsibility towards Iraq for decades. We made the mess we have to clear it up. So I favour us retaining a troop presence for the foreseeable future.

Secondly if we want to avoid terrorism we have to work for world were it struggles to thrive. This means a lot of hard work and joined up government, making sure we make good economic and foreign policy decisions.

I don't see the struggle as a war because that implies physical battles. It is more long term then that.

Iraq was an insignificant little country beforehand and will remain an insignificant little country no matter how many billions of dollars, lives you throw at it, for however many decades

I can't judge the war based upon number of deaths. If it's justifiable at all, then the deaths are a necessary evil. If it's not justifiable, then it was before there was even 1 death.

Sure, for an easy example study WWII; but there are quite a few more historical examples of ideologues being defeated through war fair.

As for the Afganistan -Soviet conflict; that’s a prefect example of three issues apparent in the current conflict.

One; it demonstrates for us how Western might can help liberate a people and send them on their way toward prosperity.

Two; how that prosperity can be Fed-up when the West skirts the responsibilities it once had committed to when the American people and politicians become board and seek to once again demonstrate to the world their nat sized attention spans. Had the US lived up to its commitments to the people of Afghanistan once we helped them through off the Soviets much less money and bloodshed would have been needed in the future (now present). For the price of a few schools and similar necessities Afghanistan could have possibly been a friendly country rather than the safe haven to terrorist that it became after dogged our responsibilities. Now the same arguments are being made for Iraq, as if people are reluctant to learn from history.

And three; while Afghanistan was not the only battle field in the cold war, it helps to demonstrate how an ideologue can be defeated in part through war fair.
