Agreed.

Vice Fleet Admiral Andrew Scott,

The Tangent thread and your 'New' thread are the only two such threads on the Sistertrek Board in which there have ever been tangents. Just thought you should know. :wave2:

Ok - I have to go back to the tangent for a moment here.

This is actually related to the Barbie doll thread - Mel and Fes, which do you think does more harm to a child's self image - a show like Hannah Montana or a Barbie Doll. Or neither

We sell a line of Hannah Montana clothing at Wal-Mart. Right beside the Mary Kate and Ashley clothing for kids. Parents can turn thier children into real live "Barbie Dolls" with these clothes.

Minuet,

I would have to say that in my view neither harms a child's self-image. Our children love the show, and they like Barbie dolls. We haven't bought any of the clothing associated with Hannah or Barbie, though. My wife makes all of the girls' clothing.

I'm off to Latin class. Talk to you all tonight. ;)

My daughter is singing a Hannah Montana song in the other room at this moment.

I don't usually buy any "designer" clothes for her. She grows too fast for me to justify the expense. Her feet have however come to a steady size 8, so I can invest a bit more, since I know she will wear them a lot longer.

We can almost wear the same shoes now...

As far as self image, even I as a child knew that the Barbie doll image was unrealistic. I think my self image has not suffered..lol

Size 8 already? Big feet. My daughter has size 6 feet. She was a size three until last year and was pretty upset that she was still wearing children's shoes when almost everyone else was up to adult size  She is a short, more petite girl.

Wal-Mart clothing cannot quite be described as "designer". Considering the fashion forwardness of these items the prices are pretty darn good with items like jeans coming in at around $20 - $25.

A heck of a lot cheaper then The Gap.

I agree with that.

A kid's personality is going to ultimately decide if they like these clothes or not. My older daughter has never been picky about clothes. With my younger daughter it is a daily battle because what the other kids wear is so important to her.

Considering they were brought up the same way I certainly don't think I turned my daughter into a fashion fanatic. It's just something that comes naturally to her. She is a bit on the chubby side so I have to work hard to make her feel beautiful as she gets older. Already she has described herself as "fat" (which she is not - she is built larger and is the tallest girl in her class)

Six years old and I am already worrying about her self image. But keeping the dolls from her is not the answer. She isn't trying to be a Barbie doll. She just is experimenting to find her own style.
