During dinner tonight, our family continued one of our traditions during Halloween--we watched Catspaw. The episode gives us the introduction of Chekov--whose name is said only once in the episode. For about thirty or so minutes, I was curious if he had a name at this point in production, since it was the first produced episode of that season. DeSalle was a bit hot under the collar, but I'll forgive him for that. The great "I'll bet you credits to Navy beans we can put a dent in it" line makes up for it, and it is worth the price of admission for me, as is seeing non-humanoid life forms (Korob and Sylvia), albeit all too briefly. I love Crewman Jackson's fall, too. "Jackson ... ready to beam up." And, "One to beam up, Sir." Kirk tries in vain to get a more detailed response--LOL, but it's tough when one's mind is not one's own! This episode also has that music that will in my mind be forever linked with Catspaw even if it appears in many other episodes before and after it. Some stock music just seems to fit better with certain episodes. Our three-year old heard the phrase "trick or treat" two or three times in it tonight, and her ears perked up.

How apropos for Halloween! They showed an episode of Catspaw on TV over the weekend. I did get a chuckle from the three witches (I'm almost certain one of them was a warlock) who almost sang melodic-ly, Captain Kirk, Captain Kirk, Captain Kirk Go back, go back, go back Remember the curse Wind shall rise (something inaudible) So leave here all Or meet your end Kirk: Spock. Comment? Spock: Very bad poetry Captain. Chekov was a real moptop back then, wasn't he? At first, I thought Silvia was played by Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched fame. I don't think it was her. I enjoyed seeing it again. |

I thought the fifth Beatle was someone named Silverman or Silverberg. In the special feature section of the DVD box set GR commented Chekov came to light as a character to reflect the modern generation. It was his way to introduce a youthful element to Star Trek. Needless to say it works.
