SPECIAL EVENT: Remastered "Menagerie" in Theatres!

On Tuesday, November 13, the two-part Star Trek Remastered version of "The Menagerie” will beam onto the big screen in a special engagement with selected theatres. The screening — a first for episodic Star Trek on this scale — will be seen in nearly 300 venues across the U.S. and Canada. This one-night-only event will also feature a special introduction by Eugene "Rod” Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, plus an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Remastered series.
"The Menagerie" will be presented in its digitally remastered, high-definition format and in Cinema Surround Sound. The screening is in part to promote the HD-DVD/DVD release the following week (Nov. 20) by CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment.

If you recall, the two-part "Menagerie" is the only episode to feature the casts of both the original pilot and the regular series, with Spock the only character to make the transition from from the pilot to the series. Much of the footage, of course, is taken from the rejected first pilot "The Cage." The story sees the Vulcan hell-bent on returning Captain Pike to Talos IV, the intention being that this is where his injured former commander can peacefully live out the rest of his days. Spock risks his career in Starfleet by hijacking the Enterprise and faces a court-martial for his actions. All this is eventually revealed to be an illusion, courtesy of the Talosians and their very strong telepathic hallucinations. Spock is then exonerated, Pike is returned and everything works out in the end. (Oops! Sorry to give it away!) "The Menagerie" was the 16th episode of Star Trek produced, and the 11th one to air.

If this came to my area, I would probably go see it, esp. since it would be on the big screen. I think the evening would remind me somewhat of the early conventions I attended.

I went to a Star Trek conventnion in 1979 at UBC (Vancouver) where Gene Roddenberry brought his original black and white film copy of "The Cage". We viewed it on a large pull down screen in the main auditorium. Only a couple of hundred people showed up, so it was all very intimate.

That was the day that I got to shake hands with Gene; something I will never forget. He was the only person from the "Trek" world at the convention. Even my girlfriend (at the time) who wasn't really into Star Trek thought that the whole things was kind of cool. Almost everyone there was generally in my age group (their twenties).

By the way, Gene passed away on my birthday, Oct. 24, (1991).

The "Cage" and "Menagerie" episodes have a deep significance for me.

A number of years back The Cage was aired on TV during a marathon. I think it was just before TNG started - it was part of the buildup, along with other favorite episodes and a special sneak preview of TNG. I got it on tape and I have watched it a couple of times.

Very interesting to watch.

Franko,

Wow, I've never heard this story from you before. That's sooo cool, in so many ways.

Awesome. It would have been great to meet the man. Very inspiring.

Yes, whenever I see the dedication (I think it's Unification, interestingly enough) for the passing of Gene, I get chills.

I can see why. They are special episodes, and earning the Hugo Award didn't hurt, either. :)

Minuet,

I seem to recall this as well. I purchased The Cage (no. 1) almost to the day that it was released; this edition has lengthy commentary by Gene at the beginning and then (a snippet) at the conclusion of the episode. This is the one that moves back and forth from b&w to color and back throughout its course.

Jeffrey Hunter also played Jesus in "King Of Kings", one of my more preferred films in that genre, which I had seen many times when I was younger before I saw "The Cage".

In fact, his character of "Christopher Pike" is a bit of a play on that.

(Pikes are also fish; the secret symbol of 1st century Christians)

Yeah, it's all a bit loaded. ;)

Wow, Franko ... :hail:

This is such cool news, and thankfully there's a couple theaters in my area showing this! Must go early, as this is a one-shot deal.

Yes, as did I. He was a very convincing Jesus, too.

I've seen The Doomsday Machine on the large screen (at a convention when I was in High School). This would have been ca. 1974 or so. It was amazing.

Agreed! :)

BTW, it wasn't really a sanctioned convention--more like a lot of people getting together because they like Trek. (Of course, that's probably how the first ones began. :))
