Ok, thread title a bit misleading then ;)

How is the thread title misleading?

I am trying to enter into a different lifestyle. I'm completely cutting out certain things that I've tried to cut out before, like fast food and pop. Just trying to get healthier.

Well, with the word Lifestyle, thought you were going to tell us you were going to start playing for the other team or were going to run off to join a commune, or start voting Republican ;)

Didnt think it just meant changing to a better diet

I am Republican.

Oh well .... we will try not to hold it against you .

You are young enough to learn the error of your ways afterall, and no one is perfect.

You don't need a scale , all you need is a leather belt (it wont stretch) , that will indicate if you are loosing weight.

180 lbs for someone 5'8" is not a lot. ( 82 kg )

Sounds about right to me , maybe even UNDERWEIGHT  , so why do you  think you need to loose weight ???

Now if you said that you weighed 180 kg , I would say , yes , that is overweight for someone your height. You are not overweight.

Actually it is more than you should be, Bug. Somerled might be thinking of males, and even 180 for a large framed male is considered overweight.

A woman with a small frame at 5'6" should optimally weigh between 120 and 133 pounds.

A woman with a medium frame at 5'6" should optimally weigh between 130 and 144 pounds.

A woman with a large frame at 5'6" should optimally weigh between 140 and 159 pounds.

The proper foods and decent exercise will get you there. It takes time. This is the killer of many diets... not getting immediate results. Things take time and persistence. Have faith in yourself and you'll be just fine.

http://www.dietbites.com/article1023.html

I am tall, but I'm also small boned. I can touch my thumb to my index finder around my wrist (I do have freaksihly large hands though )

And Somerled...I do not like political debate, but I will say that neither side is perfect. So badgering won't work :P

And trust me, learning time has been a life-lesson for me the past year and a half. I think I have a pretty good handle on it now

From a dieting site. I wouldn't put much weight(pardon the pun) on this article. I'm 5'2" and I weigh 165lbs. My frame isn't really that large, but no one will say I'm really overweight. But I did read somewhere that the ideal weight for my height was around 130. Not for 5'6". That would be considered pretty skinny I think.

Bug, if I were you I would lose weight if it makes you feel better. Not to adhere to the standards of ANY diet website. I'd more be looking at medical sites.

This is quite true. I give myself between four and six months to prepare for a marathon. When I lost fifty pounds many years ago, it was done over a six-month period. BTW, I think the 'instant gratification' mindset is debilitating, but it probably won't go away. Things take time. And patience is still a virtue. :Fes:

Actually, the data originally came from Metropolitan Life Insurance Actuarial tables. Here's the same data from another site.

Oh, and the tables should be used for women wearing 1" heels.

http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/met.htm

There are also ways to determine your frame size.

At the bottom of the page is a link to another page with an interesting calculator.

Interesting for me, at 5'11" and 199 pounds. For my large frame I shouldn't be more than 188. Maybe so. I notice the aches in my knee more, especially climbing stairs. Climbing ten stories of ramps followed by stairways to the upper deck last Saturday had me wishing for my cane again. I am currently 4 lbs over Navy allowable maximum, not that I could pass the physical again, but I try to keep close.

I had a physical about two months ago (it was in late June). I did so in order to increase the amount of life insurance I have on me, just in case I were to pass away suddenly.

They took my blood pressure three times (I'm told this is now standard procedure). I knew it would be slightly high the first time, as I really don't like it being taken. I never have, actually. It decreased steadily the next two times (to around 130/80). When I've completed a ten-mile (or so) run, my blood pressure is routinely around 135/90. The lower number decreases once I'm at rest.

My pulse was around 52 beats per minute. This low pulse, coupled with no abnormalities in my heart rate, made the person doing the examination quite happy. I did not like having the HIV test, since there is no way I could have any HIV-related positives if what I read on the subject is accurate. (One never knows with false positives these days.) But I had it done anyway, so as not to raise any red flags during the application process. In any event, I passed, and the insurance was increased substantially.

I wish that i had a dollar for everytime that i have told my wife to quit diagnosing herself from webpages and ask her #&@*(^#% doctor. We're paying her, ask her, she's an expert. Geeze.

Hoss,

Is that the doctor's name? I'd like a recommendation, if possible. Thanks.

Let me get this straight, You can wrap your thumb around your hand until it comes back around and touches your index finger?

I just tried this. With the middle and ring (fourth) fingers it is easy, but with the index finger, I come up short by about a centimeter.
