So for the past few days I've been feeling thinner. I don't know if I have actually lost some weight or not (I don't have a scale in my room), but I don't know if it's an all-in-your head thing or if I actually have. Have any of you ever had this feeling before? I am being more choosey in what I eat (especially with school food ), and I'll be starting up a Karate/Self-Defense class this Friday with the drummer from church. He said that yes, if you vary your diet on top of doing the class twice a week you will lose weight, which is what I'm looking forward to. I know 180 lbs may not seem to be that much, but It sometimes does get depressing when you can't really fit into your jeans anymore and you don't have the money to buy a new pair. I'd rather buy them a size SMALLer than a size LARGer. LOL. So if one were to weigh 130 lbs, what size range would that put you into? I'm a 12 right now...probably more borderline 13 or 14. I figured 130 was a safe range...I haven't weighed less than 145 since my freshman year in high school. It would be nice to not be in the double digets for once. I should do that picture thing...you know at the start of your diet/exercise regime...this is what you looked like when you started and this is what you look like now type thing. |

I think she asked because your clothing size seems small for the weight you listed. Mel and I are both only 5' 2". (I remember Mel mentioning her height before) You are quite tall - losing some weight couldn't hurt but you aren't really massivly overweight by any stretch of the imagination if you can fit a size 12. Let a professional - ie your doctor - help you set a goal weight. Your height and body type all fit into the equation . Exercising is definitly the best way to go along with eating healthy. Starvation diets don't work. |

Don't get overly obsessed with the numbers on the scale Bug. In fact, don't even step on one. If you're like me, you gauge everything by how your present clothes feel (or how your shoes fit). Just be careful you're not continually buying a size up.
Here's one of my favorite motivators. Buy a really nice outfit. Maybe one size smaller or a little snug. Hang that outfit up on your closet door and look at it every time you go into your closet to change your clothes and work towards fitting into that dress. That should disuade you from that piece of cheesecake. Stay away from the pizza and the pop and take the long walks around the beautiful campus. I don't know how much exercise you get on a daily basis but I find that getting a certain amount in everyday helps me a lot especially when I'm stressed out....it helps my headaches, it clears my head, and I feel more energetic. It's also a good time to reflect. |

You don't need a scale , all you need is a leather belt (it wont stretch) , that will indicate if you are loosing weight. 180 lbs for someone 5'8" is not a lot. ( 82 kg ) Sounds about right to me , maybe even UNDERWEIGHT , so why do you think you need to loose weight ??? Now if you said that you weighed 180 kg , I would say , yes , that is overweight for someone your height. You are not overweight. |

Bug, I came to the realization that eating (or dieting, if you will) is a way of life, not just something one does for a few weeks. This was many years ago. Also, I've been exercising regularly since 1978 (some years more rigorously than others). For me, it (eating correctly and exercising) is forever now.
Truer words have not been spoken. The body definitely 'shuts down' when it is starved. You will actually lose more weight by eating (eating nutritiously, that is--not empty calories) than you will by not eating at all. For years I refused to believe this until I put it into practice. The body needs the nourishment to 'jump start' the metabolism. Once that has occured, significant weight loss can occur. If you do end up exercising more arduously, don't be discouraged that you will gain wait in the beginning. Muscle is heavier than fat, so this (a slight weight gain) stands to reason if you are tearing down muscle tissue in order to build it up again (which is what occurs when one runs). |

How is the thread title misleading? I am trying to enter into a different lifestyle. I'm completely cutting out certain things that I've tried to cut out before, like fast food and pop. Just trying to get healthier. |

Actually it is more than you should be, Bug. Somerled might be thinking of males, and even 180 for a large framed male is considered overweight. A woman with a small frame at 5'6" should optimally weigh between 120 and 133 pounds. A woman with a medium frame at 5'6" should optimally weigh between 130 and 144 pounds. A woman with a large frame at 5'6" should optimally weigh between 140 and 159 pounds. The proper foods and decent exercise will get you there. It takes time. This is the killer of many diets... not getting immediate results. Things take time and persistence. Have faith in yourself and you'll be just fine. http://www.dietbites.com/article1023.html |
