Best to do things that take your mind off smoking. Years ago I had a hard time quitting; I used the "taper off incrementally" technique until I could go a whole day without one. Then I vowed to never go back.

My dad had a wisdom tooth pulled when he was 60. He smoked a pipe and the dentist told him not to smoke for 3 weeks because you have to suck so hard on a pipe. After the 3 weeks he decided that he should just keep not smoking. That was almost 20 years ago and he still is not smoking.

When people asked how he quit he tells them we hid his pipe while he was under doctors orders.

Good luck and be strong

My dad used to smoke a pipe as well. He got into the habit of going down to the basement after dinner to have his pipe. We all stayed out of the room when he smoked because we hated the smell.

Well one day he just up and quit without telling anyone about it. Took weeks till we all noticed :rotfl:

Well, I'm 21 hours without one, and that's the longest I've ever gone without except for when I was in jail for 2 days. I'm going nuts.

My uncle Ben quit when we got here to college. I never knew that he smoked until my junior year in high school. My uncle can very easily become addicted to stuff like that (to anything really...he got really hooked on Pepsi for a while ). I think the main reason was not only was he starting a new life by going back to college, but he had a 1 1/2 year old daughter, and another one on the way to worry about being able to be around for a long time, so he stopped.

I wonder how he's doing with that... :headscratch:

i know it's hard. but keep with it.

right now I'm trying the, smoking less and less. I usually went through a half pack a day. today I had only 5, I'm going to make this pack last until sunday.

quitting is hard very very, but stick with it man.

I found cold turkey was the best way to go but I had not been smoking for years and years at the time.

There is always help available too - like a nicotine patch. Talk to your doctor.

Not to be problematic, but if you're just dying for one, then maybe you should have one.

I used to keep stretching the time out between smokes when I was quitting.

I"m not a big fan of the "cold turkey" technique, or even these nicotine patches, although I know they help some people. A lot of the temptation for a smoke is psychological. As you taper off, the body will become more tolerant of getting less and less nicotine. But that reflex desire to smoke can activate brain chemistry which makes your cravings even worse.

So, if you're really, really, uncomfortable, better to break down and have one. Don't look at it as failure, or giving in. This game takes a while, but if you're determined you can do it.

Stimulants like coffee and alcohol unfortunately bring on cravings.

When you finally light up and the first couple of drags make you dizzy, then you know you've turned the corner.
