No Fes - Tuition must be paid at all universities and colleges.

There are programs to help - bursarys and the like.

Minuet,

Is higher education free (not just tax free) as well? I recall hearing this several years ago, from a friend who lives in Moncton. I thought that was quite a deal!

You know someone in New Brunswick other than me?

What do you mean by higher education? College, University? Definitely not free.

Kate,

Yes, college and university. I heard this years ago. This would have been ca. 1971 or so. A man from Tignish (a good friend of the family) told me this. He must have either been joking, or times really have changed.

Hmm I don't know what it was like back then. I was only born in 79.

I know we have to pay now. If we didn't, I'd have gone through college or uni a long time ago. I'm lucky I got a scholarship for this year. But I'm still paying other fees such as books, laptop and fees associated with the use of the laptop, such as software, access to the school's wireless network...etc, and of course registration fees. So far I'm doing it debt free. :)

Tuition was always payable. I paid in the early 80's, my sister paid in the late 70's.

Minuet and Kate,

Then I don't know what I was thinking of back then, or what I was told. Hmmm. Let me ask you this: was/is K-12 free?

Yes - of course. Except these days we spend more on school supplies then in the past.

That must be it, then.

You say 'Of course.' Why? It's not free in the USA. We pay around $6,500 per student, and much of these monies come about via our taxes.

Addendum: I didn't mean to imply that we (my wife and I) pay that amount. We contribute to an average per student, which equals somewhere in that ballpark. :)

We pay via our taxes, plus we have to pay for school supplies and we have to pay 20$ per child/35$ per family for 'tuition'.

What is the $20 -$35 all about?

I don't think we have that here - it must be your school requesting that. Is that a one time fee at the beginning of the school year?

Yes, I understand. (BTW, please see my addendum which attempts to clarify one point.) :)

Just for the record - I had to buy more school supplies when I was in Texas then I do in Ontario. We supplied everything right down to each student bringing in a specific amount of construction paper for class use.

I have to provide certain items here - but not nearly as much as I did there. They sold school and grade specific "kits" at the stores to make it easier because the list of items was so long. I spent days finding what I needed for my daughter because the kit for her school was sold out by the time I got the list (we got there and registered only a week before school started)

Edit - it was a real racket - they asked for specific brands on some items. I ignored some of those because it was stupid to pay more for the same item.

I did understand it that way to begin with

Everyone contributes to schools through taxes whether they have children or not.

And in my opinion all benefit in the long run when our children are educated properly.
