Currently at $300,000,000 with the Cash Option being $140,300,000. Should I try it just on the off chance I might win? It would accelerate my moving plans by four years, but it'd be so fast instead of gathering everything up slowly and then going.

lottery is fools tax, but it's your choice and I can't choose for you. I am glad there is a lottery. It is a good way to shift some of the tax burden to the stupid and off of me. |

 That's so true. It is tempting when the jackpot is so big, but the chances are sooooooooo slim, that I never bother. |

Apparently we look like this now

My job took up a pool. $5 each, and if one of them wins, we split it with everyone who got in. I havent played the lottery in years, so I figured what the hell. |

Go for it Sophie ![]() When you win, remember who was the first person to vote 'Yes' that you should do so. Treat him nicely

Sophie, I would say 'no,' but if you believe you have money to throw away, then the answer would be 'yes.'

How much is one ticket? If it's only a dollar or a deuce, then it might just be fun for the heck of it. I never play our 6/49 lotto up here in Frankoland. Sometimes the pot gets up to 20 or 30 million (usually just under ten) but the odds of matching six out of six are 14 million to one. I sometimes blow a couple of bucks on local charity raffles and stuff though; that way I can rationalize it as being all for a good cause. |

At a dollar each , I might be inclined to buy several tickets from several different lottery agencies. Gotta be in it to win it. I only buy Lotto and Powerball tickets when these have jackpotted to at least $16 million. I don't bother watching the draw , if I win , they'll call me and if it's a minor prize , I'll get a cheque in the mail. We don't pay income tax on winfalls like lottery wins here in Australia BTW. I don't gamble otherwise. |

How the heck could they call you? They don't take your name and phone number when you buy the ticket.

As far as I know, we don't pay taxes on lottery winnings either. I only know that from filling out my own tax returns and reading it in the guide they provide. |

^^^ Minuet, Is higher education free (not just tax free) as well? I recall hearing this several years ago, from a friend who lives in Moncton. I thought that was quite a deal! |

Now with my internship, i have money to spare (until i have to support someone) so every now and then when the lottery is really high i buy a ticket. I feel its like Jerry seinfelds quip about McDonalds. "Hmm...99 Billion sold? Okay i'll have one!" So every few months for me its like, "Hmm...$20 Million prize? Okay i'll buy one (for $2 Canadian)" Of course i don't really expect to win. But like i said i have $2 to spare, and i dont spend more than that. BTW, Sophie, next time you sign up for a $300 mil lottery and win, I expect a weekend retreat for Sistertrekians.
