Okay, I really loved listening to the final TOS original music CD today. As I mentioned above, this one has music from Mirror Mirror, By Any Other Name, The Trouble With Tribbles, and The Empath. It's so well-constructed, and although programmatic, can stand alone on its own merits rather well. BTW, I think I need to amend my statement above, as I think music from The Empath was also used in Is There In Truth No Beauty? (or vice-versa). In any event, when I was listening to it today, I thought of that episode as well as where it might have been used in a couple of segments from The Apple (esp. when Makora was about to kiss Sayana). |

And you'd be right. I actually enjoyed returning musical themes in certain TOS episodes. That trippy Vulcan acoustic thngy they'd sometimes play would show up in little places from time to time. OK, here's a real esoteric one. There is a TNG episode, and I think there is only one, where at the end of the intro they do a carbon copy of a climax builder theme that was used in several TOS episodes. Of course, this isn't the kind of trivia you'd likely run into even on various Trek boards. I'm still trying to find the TNG episode in question, but I know it's one of the third or fourth season eps. |

Franko, Wow. If true, this may have escaped me. When you say 'carbon copy,' what exactly do you mean? Is it similar or identical orchestration, melody, harmony, etc? Do tell. Is there any way you can give me the TOS music you're referring to in this case? Could it be (e.g.) the climax building theme we hear in The Lights of Zetar, as we move closer to Mira Romaine's eyes prior to the freeze-frame? I have a vague memory of this theme (or something very similar) occurring in TNG. Or is it another theme? This is intriguing!

I'll get back to you on this one, Fes. It's one of those TOS classic buildups in the intro just before the credits....... I'll have to wait until I run into the TNG ep I'm referring to. I have season three but not four on DVD, so we will have to see. In the meantime, watch TWOK sometime when you can hear the soundtrack clearly. There are musical parts in the film that are related to some of the TOS themes. Many of them are jazzed up a bit, but I always notice some distinct passages that can't be just a coincidence. Then again, I could be crazy...... |

^^^ No, you're not crazy. As I mentioned, I do have a vague memory of what you're talking about. I'm thinking it may have been the music to The Corbomite Maneuver (you know, when they see the cube and it begins to rotate very quickly). Please do keep me posted.
