My wife and I are thinking of purchasing a new PC (probably a Dell at this point). Question: Does anyone on this Board have a widescreen monitor, and if so, do you like it? We're looking at a 20" WS monitor at present. |

I've used one a few times while working on other folks computers and I love it... I've been wanting to get one for my PC for quite a while now. I have a Dell computer. I've never had any problems with it yet in the 16 months I've had it. |

Kate, Thanks! I wish I could beam you here so that you could take a peek at what we're building for our system now. Thus far, we've got 250 gig and a heck of a lot of other stuff (around $1,200 thus far). I'm going to try to cut-and-paste the URL for where we are at present, so you can see the components. Today, our home computer froze up for the third time in six months. We've been putting off getting a new one for some time. Now, we're ready to buy one. Since I can't get online from home (I'm at work now), I may not be able to respond after 5:30, which is when I'm leaving for home. But I'd still be very interested to hear what you have to say about what we've got as a package thus far. ![]() I will check back in tomorrow, or if by some chance we are able to get online from home, I'll check in tonight. Thanks again for the feedback.

Kate, Darn. For some reason, Dell is requiring me to sign in in order to view my cart from another workstation. I can't seem to retrieve it now.

Awesome! The bigger the hard drive the better I always say. I have a mere 70gigs at the moment, and it's always filling up. My bf bought me a 350 gig HD, and is bringing it with him when he comes in a few weeks(OMG! ). I can't wait to install that baby in. Also I just upgraded my RAM from 512 to 768MB a couple of days ago. My pc in it's original state is just a shadow of what I've done to it so far...or at least will be when I install the new HD. |

I recommend getting a LCD monitor and not one of the big bulky old type ones. My LCD is 19" and i like it. A 20" would be nice. The advantage is begin able to have two or three windows open at once that you can see. Check into the quality of the monitor before you buy it. |

Actually, around here you can't buy anything other than flatscreen LCD monitors. They've come down in price a lot, too. 17 inch is pretty good. Most of the LCD monitors have good resolution, although there is a way to interpret which ones are better. (which I forget so someone else will have to explain that in technical terms) |

One of my housemates just got a new widescreen LCD monitor. I must say its very nice, the display seems to be a lot clearer than my old CRT monitor even though my CRT is one of the better models. If going for a new PC I would recommend you get a flat screen. One thing to add is that an LCD flat screen will almost certainly be more energy efficient. A good LCD might draw 30-50 watts against 100-150 for the most efficient CRTs. |

My wife and I both have 20.1" "wide screen" monitors. They're made by Princeton. Hang on and let me check the model number... LCD2008W. These are the ones without built-in speakers. They were $270 each at Costco. I like having them because they display both pages of a Word doc (for example) nicely and with a readable font size. Mine is good for gaming, too. Great detail for Rome: Total War and Barbarian Invasions. |

Fes get a Compaq, Dell's are over priced and suck. A dell version of my laptop cost 300 bucks more and the dell had inferior parts in it. |

Thanks to all for your feedback. We ended up getting the Dell 20" WS (flat) monitor, with 250 gig and a ton of extras. We put most of our monies toward the upper-end monitor and video card. We spend just under $1300. The only thing we didn't get this time around was a floppy drive. We really didn't see the point of it, unless we need one for start-up (assuming that were to be a problem down the road). Thanks again!

'Skid, We went with Dell not only because of the product, but because they have excellent customer service (went with multi-year warranty). |

Mine doesn't have a Floppy Drive either. They're unreliable anyway, and with the drop in prices for USB flash drives, who needs them? My smaller 256mb flash drive was only about 20$ and it's a lot bigger then a floppy that's 1.44mb. And a lot easier to carry around as it's much smaller in physical size, and are way more reliable. Although I don't use it much anymore since getting a 2gb flash drive for my last birthday(which is even smaller in size than my 256mb drive.. ). |
