We all know TOS is a landmark series with thought provoking stories and strong, instantly likeable characters. These elements sparked numerous imitations, four spin off sereis - TNG, DS9, VOY and TAS - and ten movies. It had a large collection of novels, toys, novelties, merchandise and clothing lines. Over the years a number of the original cast and crew had beamed up to the great Starfleet headquarters in the sky. It make me wonder if any of the original crew and cast members had the most commonly spioken catch phrase - "He's dead, Jim." written on their tomb stones.

After witnessing its fortieth birthday, this series got me wondering about a number of questions that had come to my attention.

So ready or not, here they come.

First question - Why did Kielso refer to the time barrier as being broken in the Menagerie when he and the landing party met the illusion of Vina and a surviving crew of a crash landing on Talos IV? :headscratch:

Second question - How did the Enterprise reached the edge of the galaxy not once, but three times? Is our galaxy that small? :chin:

Third question - Had it ever make you wonder what happen to crew members after they completed a tour of duty onboard the ship?

I may have more questions for you to ponder later. Stay tune.

You may start the discussion when ready.

I can help with this one!

The crew members wearing red uniforms never got to complete a tour of duty - they always met their doom! :o

The answer to the first question is that refinements to warp drive in the mid 23rd century were known as the Time Drive and therefore warp space was referred to as the "time barrier". However, lawyers from the Time-Life company had the courts issue a "cease-and-desist" order forcing the UFP to go back to using the archaic term "warp".

Your second question is two questions. The answers are 42 and yes.

Digifan,

By my count, it's five (I include TAS).

The Sam,

LOL! I hadn't considered *which* five series were being considered. I just assumed. Good point, even if it turns out not to be his intention. :)

:D I actually found someone who has broken the 'Red Shirt Phenomenon' down to episodes!

What factors could increase/decrease the survival rate of red shirted crewman has an interesting result. According to this author, whenever Captain Kirk meets an alien woman and 'makes contact' the survival rate of the red shirted crewman increases by 84% !

My answer to this question is this, aren't we on an outer spiral arm of this galaxy and wouldn't this make the edge a lot closer? I guess it's a case of galactic perspective. :chin:

Don't make me use my bare hands on you.
I don't think that we are terribly close to the 'edge' of the galaxy; if the galaxy can be said to have an edge.
