Apparently we look like this now
A special on the History Channel tonight...starts in 25 minutes, about General Sherman's march to Atlanta during the Civil War. I'm going to watch it. The North considered him a war hero. The South considered him a war criminal. I'm not sure how I see him, because his actions while brutal ended the war faster.

This viewing is a re airing from earlier tonight, so I will not be replying in this thread until I've watched it.

The Civil War was brutal on all sides. The crazy thing is, it wasn't until after the war that people realized that germs cause infection. Most injuries resulted in amputation. :scared:

One thing that wasn't mentioned on this special was WHY Savannah was spared. It was a beautiful city, and he couldn't bring himself to sack it like he did Atlanta. That's why there are so many pre Civil War buildings there, yet there arent in Atlanta, GA and Columbia, SC.

One thing I found out though was his march through South Carolina. He was far more brutal in SC than in GA. The city of Columbia was burnt to the ground, while Atlanta was only about 30% destroyed.

I'm a native Floridian, but I have adopted South Carolina as my home. Seeing this special, and finding out how much more brutal Sherman was in SC kind of made me feel a small bit of hostility, still, he was the one who ended the war. Had he not done what he did in Atlanta, and then South Carolina, the war would have lasted much longer. I knew this, but I didn't know that he pretty much destroyed all of SC that he went to.

Necessary? Yes.
Hero or criminal?

Hero.

SC was the first and the last secession. They were probably the most extreme in their view of the Union. At the time, the Northerners were freeing slaves, which in the Southern view was stealing "property" and "encouraging servile insurrection".

I watched this last night. Excellent show. I had to watch the rerun because the Sopranos were on.
