Sorry for getting this one up late. I've been a bit preoccupied... If you saw this one, let us know what you thought of it. There was one part that I felt looked a bit weak, maybe it's just me and the fact that I was getting really tired at the time (I may have to take to just recording these episodes and watching them at a less ungodly hour than 1 AM!). The scene where the Enterprise breaks away from Balok's tractor beam. In the original you just sort of turn away with the Enterprise (looking forward from between the nacelles) as the lights Balok's small craft dim. In this revamped version you get a long distance shot and watch the Enterprise break away and fly off into the distance. This looked a bit rushed and fake to me. I did like the sequence where the Enterprise fires on the cube/buoy. I thought that the redone Fesarius (the ship, not the poster!) was quite impressive. If it were me I might have been tempted to CGI the dummy Balok so that it looked less like a mannequin. The best part of this episode are the interactions among the bridge crew as Balok's countdown to their destruction goes by. Spock stumbling over his words to Kirk when the latter asks for recommendations ("I'm sor--" then standing up straighter, "I regret that I have no..."). Scotty telling Spock, "May heaven have helped your mother," when the first officer remarks that Balok reminds him of his father. Chess, had already played a role in the background of more than one epsiode up to this point, but here they switch to the poker analogy. The tension between Kirk and McCoy regarding Bailey. Sulu's tendency to remind everyone just how much time they have left before they are to be destroyed, and how that seems to just exaccerabte the tension on the bridge. |

Agreed.
I also liked the scene of the Enterprise firing on the Fesarius. I really enjoyed the exterior shots of the Cube and the Enterprise. The strobing effect of the Cube on the outside of the Enterprise was excellent. They did an excellent job on the Fesarius. I also thought they were going to touch up Balock a little.
Agreed. The tension amongst the bridge crew was thick. Even Scotty was getting tired of Mr. Sulu's countdown. Great Episode. Thank God for Tivo! |

Thanks for reminding me of that bit! When I saw it in the episode I made a mental note to myself to comment on that, since it was something that could not be seen in the original version. However, when I finally started this thread I had misplaced that mental note... They also, and I still want to rewatch the original version to be sure, had something of that strobe effect on the faces of the bridge crew as they watched it on the screen. I think that was also added in, and it was very subtle but sensible. |

I've made it a habit to watch the original, shortly after the Remastered one. |

I've been trying, when I can, to do the opposite. Watch the original first so that I am hopefully more apt to notice the alterations, especially the subtle changes like lighting and view screen images... |

Yes, in the original Kirk, McCoy and Bailey come across the mannequin-Balok. However, I'm thinking that current technology even here on Earth now would allow us to create a more convincing animatronic figure. Upgrading it's head movements and facial expressions via CGI might not have been a bad idea. Though, from everything I've been reading there is a hesitancy to overdo the upgrades for fear of negative fan response. And, yes, you may have to wait for dvd versions if they ever do them. |
