What's your favorite episode of the Original Series where a civilization is influenced by Earth culture and goes terribly wrong? I think my favorite is Bread and Circuses. I liked the portrayal of the media and the focus on violence and intolerance as part of the culture. I also liked the character of the former gladiator turned "Son worshipper". |

Patterns of Force. This was an even more flagrant violation of the Prime Dir. by a human who thought that progress could be made by employing some of the more "benevolent" aspects of Nazi Germany. Maybe I read too much into it, but I've always thought that a culture devoted to maximum utilitarianism and obsessive cultural purity will always become a totalitarian nightmare. I didn't think that "A Piece of the Action" was really believable, to be honest. More of a good comedy than anything else. I"m not sure that the Neo-Roman Empire type thing portrayed in "Bread and Circuses" was influenced by any human or alien contact. Like Omega Glory it was kind of just a phenomenal fluke of similarity. (I think) |

I would really like to see "Bread and Circuses" followed up on at some point. The reason being that I would like a better explanation for how this culture developed (I seem to recall a concept being used called "Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planet Development," but that never sat well with me. I guess, I would really like to find out it was a result of a transplanting at some point prior to human development of space flight. However, my favorite happens to be the Iotians in "A Piece of the Action." Yes, "Patterns of Force" ranks right up there with it and is a very frightening episode due to John Gil's audacity to try his experiment on Ekos. However, "Action" shows the unintended results of what the previous visitors thought was a harmless act. |

Always had a soft spot for Omega Glory, a very eerie ep in a way, despite the silly ending Patterns of force close behind though |
