TAS began airing in 1972, and yes it was on Saturday mornings.

To me it remains one the last really intelligently written cartoons.

It debuted on September 8, 1973, seven years to the day of the Original Series premire. (September 8, 1966).

I'm really enjoying watching these episodes.

I forget that they're cartoons and the story ends in less than half an hour.

They're surprisingly well-written for an animated show from the '70's, aren't they?

I'm watching these episodes for the first time and I'm amazed to think that these episodes were made for Saturday mornings with a target audience of "children". (Admittedly we are all kids at heart but......)

Case in point, there is an epidode titled "Jihad". It was eerie watching the episode. A galaxy wide holy war? I couldn't help making comparisons.

I also noticed characters that played supporting roles in TOS are given a lot of air time on the animated series. I've already watched a few episodes where Uhura takes a dominant role in the episode.

I'm enjoying every minute of TAS.

I too am pleased you are enjoying the series. I decided many years ago that the series is not for children. Many of the concepts are IMO way over the heads of adolescents and younger children.

Do you know why Roddenberry chose this medium to get Star Trek back into the mainstream?

I believe he chose this medium because it was the cheapest way to keep Star Trek in the public eye. I read that somewhere.

Yes. I'm pleased it completed their five-year mission, too. :)

According to the documentary on the last disk, it was GR's attempt to bring Star Trek back to mainstream TV as requested by fans but he was given a limited budget to work with at the time. It wasn't until the launch of the Star Wars phenomenon that he was given a big budget by Paramount to develope TMP which eventually led to the aborted "Phrase 2" project and TNG. :ermm: Just a minor trival you might be interested in.

I haven't gotten to the commentaries yet Digifan but thanks for the trivia! I'm still on my first run watching the animated episodes. I'll get to the last disk eventually. Sure beats watching the news these days.
