Casino Royale; The new James Bond movie

Lick the lid of life!
The new James Bond film, Casino Royale, was released in cinemas last Friday. New film, new Bond, new cars, new gadgets (sort of), but not a new storyline... This outing of 007 is based on Ian Flemming's original novel by the same name.
Casino Royale introduces James Bond before he holds his license to kill. But Bond is no less dangerous, and with two professional assassinations in quick succession, he is elevated to "00" status.
Bond's first 007 mission takes him to Madagascar, where he is to spy on a terrorist, Mollaka. Not everything goes to plan and Bond decides to investigate, independently of M16, in order to track down the rest of the terrorist cell. Following a lead to the Bahamas, he encounters Dimitrios and his girlfriend Solange. He learns Dimitrios is involved with Le Chiffre, banker to the world's terrorist organisations.
My Opinion: It is a really good film, and has a great plot and storyline, although not one of the greatest Bond films. Also, the lack of Q and a gadget-filled car, and also the lack of the usual background humour leaves you with less of a 007 feel and more of an everyday-action-film feel. Still - Daniel Craig makes for a really good younger Bond, even if he is blonde, and somewhat makes up for it slightly.

Have you seen it yet? If yes, what do you think? If no, do you plan to?

I haven't seen it yet. I was wondering about Q. I know that the actor that played him passed away before this film was made. Since this goes back in time to tell the first Bond adventure I guess they could hardly use John Cleese (Q's assistant in couple of previous outings with Brosnan). That does not explain how they are able to get away with Judi Dench as M. By all rights they really should have recast that role for this film.

As an aside, I don't know if I will get to see it in the theater. Mrs Swidden has never been a real Bond fan. However she saw the last one (the first and only Bond she saw on the big screen) and now in her eyes Pierce Brosnan is the definitive James Bond and this move does not count...

We saw it early Friday afternoon. Not at all bad. We didn't need the last 20 minutes or so.

Craig was better than I thought.

Skid,

Yeah, I too own about ten of the Bond films. I don't own any of them on DVD yet. Maybe I will spring for those some day.

I'm looking forward to the new film. I hope it doesn't attempt to break too much new ground, and stays fairly close to Fleming's formula.

I just saw it today. It was a good bond movie. At last, I have been delivered from Brosnan.

It does get a bit slow for a while and you are just kind of wondering when the next big thing is going to happen.

Enjoyed the poker part.

The action sequences were really good. The building that collapsed seemed as though it would never collapse though.

I like this Bond. He brings back something that Roger Moore had as a Bond actor. He does well at conveying the cold-blooded nature of the character and doesn't seem so caught up in how his tie looks like Brosnan did.

I give it good ratings. Seemed to be a return to the kind of Bond that I like.

I like the idea of a prequel. I always thought Bond was better during the Cold War. However, I don't know if this actor is quite good looking enough to play Bond. Ewan McGregor would be a better choice I think. Especially since this is a prequel.

My wife would disagree. blue-eyes and solid muscle. At least I didn't feel so bad about gawking at the bond girl.

I don’t really see him in the part. I keep picturing him in that ridiculous movie “Down with Love” with Renee Zellweger.

Bond men have to be good looking, but they also have to have a certain strength and edge. EM is a bit too mild-mannered….even as a Jedi ( ).

I'm going to wait for the DVD and watch it at that time. Being a long time Bond fan, my father had just seen it. He said he was not impress. He said he prefer the novel.
