I figure I will try to get this one up early. We'll see if the studios have already corrected the error, or if it will be repeated too...
I missed this one when it aired the first time, so I am really looking forward to this one! |

^^^ If I recall correctly, and no promises there, I think it was a shot of the Enterprise travelling at warp when it was supposed to be orbiting the Halkan planet... |

I just watched it. I love this episode. The planet seemed to have a purple tinge over half of it. Don't know if that is new. The ship scenes were obviously fixed up a bit. Nice to see Uhura in that "I Dream Of Jeannie" outfit. |

^^^ Actually it wasn't quite I Dream of Jeannie. Jeannie was never allowed to show her navel. I noticed that the costumes in Mirror Mirror showed navels. I wonder how that got past the censors of the day. |

It was mentioned somewhere on another site that it was the sash below her navel |

Minuet, I Dream of Jeannie took place in the mid-to-late 1960s. TOS took place ca. 2265-. By then, the censors had loosened up a bit.

I definitely saw navel. At the end the 'Captain's Woman' in the Star Trek universe comes on to the bridge and she has the biggest beehive hairdo I have ever seen. It added like foot to her height. A pity that those hairstyles are gone. A shame that we couldn't see the Klingons in a parallel universe. |

Some very nice bits in this episode. The detail of Halkan world from orbit was very good. I particularly like the fact that orbital direction of the Enterprise was corrected from the original episode. Most will recall that while the Enterprise "reversed" direction when the switch between universes took place, all subsequent shots of the I.S.S. Enterprise orbiting the planet were in the usual direction that the series featured. I guess that the origianl effects people were unaware or forgot they could have used footage from season 1's "Shore Leave" (written by SF grandmaster Theodore Strugeon) which featured a reversed oribital direction. I also like the fact that, even though it was very quick (blink and you'd miss it) the hull visibly read I.S.S. Enterprise in one shot.
In the original there was a purplish/pinkish tinge to the color of the planet. Although it was far less focused and with considerably less detail. No warp speed glitch this time. Guess they figured they had better fix that one! I think in the missing posts Fire (or maybe someone else) commented on the effect of Mr. Kyle's agonizer, the little electrical bolts shooting out from the edges as it was applied. I also noted a faint and fading reddish/pink glow on Kyle's shoulder as Spock removed the device and the transporter chief slumped to the floor. Some episodes seemed to have spruced up the hand phaser effects. I had watched the unretouched version before watching this one, and the phaser effects when one of Chekov's henchmen turns against his compatriots to save Kirk from that deceitful Pavel seem unmodified here. The subsequent scene with Chekov in the agony booth was much improved though, more of a glow instead of just a light panel. As always I have at least one complaint stemming from the editing needed to make room for the commercials. This one, to me, is one of the most glaring cuts to date. Once Kirk and company are back in their own universe, there is a conversation on the bridge between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. McCoy remarks that he liked Spock better with a beard and Kirk adds how well Mirror-Spock fit-in in his universe. Kirk also says he always suspected that Spock had a bit of a pirate in him. Spock replies how the Mirror-Kirk and company were great examples of homo sapiens. That whole bit was cut from this broadcast version. There was also a cut from just before you see Kirk and Spock observing Chekov in the agony booth. Another was when Spock catches Sulu's eavesdropping on him. Spock's computer starts beeping to alert him that Sulu is eavesdropping from the bridge. In the original Spock interacts with the computer and uncovers Kirk and Scotty's extensive use of the computer just before catching that weasly Sulu. He can't, due to the voice print lockout, learn what they have been doing, but it adds to his suspicions of the landing party. This is a very dialogue intense episode and little bits of dialogue really propel the story. As much as I liked the visual improvements, I think the cuts for their benefit did take a little bit away from this one somewhat. |

Yes, I did notice Chekov in the agony booth and thought that was new And also the glowing mark left behind with the red-shirt transporter operator was agonized. Also, now that you mentioned it, the left out a big important conversation at the end. Mainly about Spock lecturing about how much easier it was for the good Kirk to seem to fit in than the bad Kirk. That stinks. |

I watched it three times to catch that glitch, but it wasn't there. I guess the flood of emails at ST.com made it through the producers of the remasterd episodes. My only complaint is the editing. They need to find a way to cut back on commericial time and put down back those 7 or 8 minutes. Still a great episode. |
