There is a lot about this episode to like. In many ways Spock telegraphs early on his "doubts" upon seeing the silicone nodule remnants in the mining facilty director's office.

The effects for Janus were generally well done. I love looking at the old style matte paintings used just becuase there are, sometimes, a great deal of detail and amazing depth to them. However, the CGI effects do give the facility a greater 3 dimiensional appearance and the planet looks more like one where everything would be underground in this enhanced version.
