My point is, even in his maddened state, Archer saw him fit for command, AND he was quite comfortable and capable in the role.

Other than Archer, T'Pol, Tucker and Reed, who on Enterprise was capable as a starship commander? Hayes is the only one who springs to mind.

Oh, to further my point, in the episode where Reed and Hayes have a fight, and Archer calls them into his ready room to give them a dressing down, he says something along the lines of 'I will not have my senior officers fighting amongst themselves' indicating that Hayes is in fact a senior officer on board Enterprise, leaving absolutely no reason for him to be subordinate to Reed.

OH and to add one more post in this long line of posts I have here, there was some speculation about his first name earlier in this thread. His first initial is 'J'....I think that's all we'll ever know.
