Episodes: The Masterpiece Society and Ethics Connection: Concerns two relevant moral issues from 'unusual' perspectives Synopsis: The Masterpiece Society -- The Enterprise discovers a gentically engineered human colony in the path of a stellar core fragment. Will their assistance cause damage to the carefully engineered society where every person is engineered for their role in life? Ethics -- Dr Crusher clashes with a visiting doctor who uses unethical practices in her research. In the meantime, Worf struggles to deal with a crippling injury. |

I liked Ethics better. It asked tough questions, while the Masterpiece society was kind of a by the numbers show. It doesn't mean it was bad, just not as good. |

I think that Ethics succeeded more as an episode about.....ethics; and a good "Dr. Crusher" ep. The cloning ep didn't seem to really be that interesting for some reason, although it should have been. I can barely remember it. |

I actually can't pick between the two....
I liked the central theme of Masterpiece Society in how genetic engineering takes all the "fun" out of being human. There is something to say for humanity's uncertainty, adventure, and exploring both as an individual and as a society. Though on the other hand, Ethics probed both questionable medical research and euthenasia quite well. To me, both eps proved why Star Trek, while sci-fi, is relevant to us, not just some action, escapist sci-fi...although it did have its share of those episodes...

I'm the only nut so far who voted for Masterpiece society.....Ethics was probably the most boring Worf episode. Both had good ideas. |

Definitely "The Masterpiece Society." Particularly Geordi's working with Hannah and pointing out that they will owe their salvation to a piece of technolgy (VISOR tech) that was only invented because of some forms of blindness from birth could not be corrected without an assistive device. In their discussions Geordi notes that the colony would not have allowed someone like him to be born and Hannah agrees, noting that he would have been "terminated as fertilized egg" and that their founders believed no one should ever have to bear such a burden in life as Geordi does. Aside to Franko: This was not the episode about cloning. Are thinking of the Season 2 episode where Riker's, Pulaski and (was it) Troi have some of their cells stolen? This one was about a human colony living in a biosphere on a envrionmetally hostile planet that was threatened by a stellar core fragment. The inhabitants of which were all genetically engineered. Troi and the colony administrator fall for each other. |

Good points, Swidden. That was pretty cool working Geordi's visor technology into the story. Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes...
And, no worries, Franko! Hey, cloning and genetic engineering have the same scary principles at heart...playing God. -Cheers |

To tell the truth, I really didn't like either one all that much. Although it was a good story in Ethics, I just find Dr. Crusher to be too melodramatic for my taste. Masterpiece Society I thought was interesting as a premise and gave you that weird Twilight Zone type of feeling, not to mention the ethical dilemas played out, and the scene at the end when they find they were cloned and Riker kills his clone is really creepy. I guess I'll have to go with Masterpiece Society. When Crusher goes on a crusade, it just kind of turns me off.
