I think so. The development of space technology and using outer space to our benefit relies on the research and development of technology enabling mankind to live temporarily or even permanently off world. We could start putting dangerous and polluting industries on the moon instead of poisoning ourselves, mining the moon for resources, manufacturing ships in space rather than on Earth would help decrease the price of space travel. With more and more research dedicated to space travel, we could see space tourism in our lifetimes which would only help push us further to develop technology allowing us to touch the stars. |

How does one quantify the eventual payoff - self-sustaining populations on other worlds? Our species has been driven to expand to every available habitat like no other. The only real question is if we will make it off this rock before we extinguish ourselves. As long as we spend the money wisely and responsibly we have to do this, because someone will. |

Personally I can't see how anyone on this forum could say manned spaceflight isn't worth the risk...it seems contrary to everything that Star Trek is based on. It's been said here that the deaths of those lost on Columbia and Challenger were not in vain, but if we abandon manned spaceflight do you know what their deaths will be? Meaningless. Risk is part of the business...if you don't take the risk, you don't achieve anything. |
