Why on earth would we want a permanent presence of american battle groups or large american bases here in Oz ?

$$$$$$

I vote they set up the first one in Newcastle ;)

What's your problem with Newcastle!

As I Newcastle boy, I take offence!

Let me guess, you're from one of the lesser regional cities, Geelong, Townsville, or, Wollongong, perhaps?

B} ;)

I thought you were in Sydney.

Have light saber. Will travel.
There may be discussions between the US and Oz about US bases there. I do not know. I think there is concern about China. They seem to be expanionist. Tibet is one example but I think there are others. They want Taiwan. I suspect they want Korea. I believe they are in a dispute with Japan over territory.

Personally, I am tired of the US acting as the police of the world. I do think all US military should be brought back to the US except Afganistan and Iraq.

I'm in Sydney now. But I spent a fair while up there and my family is from there. Really love the place actually.

Didn't know that about somerled though!

I'm with you on that one Timbo , the last thing we need is more military here at Newcastle.

And we can do without a large American base here.

Take a look around the world , it's been 60 years since WWII and there are still American bases in Japan, Germany and the UK. Once they set up camp they are dammed hard to evict.

I for one don't want large number of heavily armed Yanks permanently based anywhere in Australia.

And who is screeching the loudest at the idea of the US leaving German bases? The German government .... and after that, German businessmen/women in the area.

A US base is an industry in its own right. The goverment itself spends big bucks to maintain it and provide local people with jobs. The military and their families live in the area as well and provide more locals with jobs.

Schroeder was sure that Chirac was going to be supported and joined him in criticizing the US. Now, the EU is stumbling a bit, Chirac popularity numbers in France are way down, and Schroeder is hearing criticism from his own people over his opposition to the US and about it's partial pull-out from Germany. When your own economy is tanking and you publicly attack one of the better employers you have, you'd better be right or you might be in trouble in your next election.
