That's a good one.

A few of my mates are in the army over here, they salivate looking at all the shiny new toys the American troops have to play with...while they get your hand-me-downs...lol...

Noah,

One way might be for people to consider alternatives to public education. We spend $1,500 per year to educate our five children right now. (The sixth child is only nine months old, but will enter the equation at a later date.) Our local public schools spend between $5,000-$6,000 per student per year. I think seeking other alternatives might help to save money. Of course, there are many other ways not related to education. And, I realize that this is not the appropriate thread to discuss a peripheral issue.

I know my opinion will not be a popular one, but I think the United States should reduce our military influence in key places across the world. For example, is Taiwan really worth going to war with China over?
There's really no reason for us to have a base in Cuba either.
Whenever Kim Jong Il kicks the bucket, we should be able to tear down the 38th parallel wall.
It's not necessary anymore for us to serve as Germany and Japan's armed forces at this point.
The Phillipines are also an autonomous nation, there's no reason for us to have a base there either.
In the beginning of the 20th Century, America expanded it's influence almost in an imperial manner resulting in annexes of several independent nations such as Samoa and Puerto Rico, etc.
It's time we allow these areas to become totally autonomous.

OK, shields up!

Noah

I have been wishing the US stop acting as the police force for the world for some time. I do not know everything that the government does but I would like to see ALL foreign US military bases closed and all the US troops brought home except for Afganistan and Iraq.

If the US spends half the world military budget it seems like the rest of the world could get together to stop the genocide in Africa.

The latest I heard was they were trying to broker a deal with our government to get permanent bases established down here.

As it is, there always seems to be a carrier docked in some port down here...However there seems to be a fair bit of public negativity toward the idea.

Who knows?

And more to the point, why would they bother? We're hardly next door to Iraq or Afghanistan...

We're talking over 300 billion dollars a year. That's over half of the entire total US budget. I believe in security and a strong military, but as 24 said, they are an enormous beaucracy that needs some trimming and I think we also ought to look at cancelling some of those contracts that haven't born fruit after several billion taxpayer dollars.

No, the US budget is over two trillion dollars, so the military expenditure is less than one-sixth. As a portion of GDP, it is less than 1%.

Why on earth would the US want a permanent presence of American battle groups or large American bases in Oz? It seems like a huge extra burdon on the American taxpayer. To reiterate, I think all US foreign military should be brought back to the US other than Afganistan and Iraq.

Who,

I believe CP was joking. He is waiting for Australia to become an independent country, and then he knows it will be taken more seriously. ;)

If the US wants to set up a base here, I'm all for it, it'll mean $$$$

But there's no real strategic reason to do so, unless the US is worried about someone invading Antartica ;)

What's your problem with Newcastle!

As I Newcastle boy, I take offence!

Let me guess, you're from one of the lesser regional cities, Geelong, Townsville, or, Wollongong, perhaps?

There's an old saying here:

It will be a great day when schools have all the money they need to function and the military has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber. ;)

Funny that this is only a saying where you are...

We have a saying here... if it weren't for the military you probably wouldn't be here.
