Since there are Canadians and Americans here, perhaps we could have a discussion to help us understand why there is animosity between the two countries? I have always considered Canada America's closest friend. When I lived in Toronto many of my friends thought that I was a Canadian even though I though it was obvious I was not. There was often a low grade animosity towards Americans. When I asked my Canadian friends why this was they did not seem to know. The only thing that came out was a concern that Canada would lose its individual culture, and its culture would be more like American culture. Not too long ago this same discussion came up on a thread. I was surprised that the fear and animosity was so great in at least one person. He said that although Canada did not have nuclear weapons, Canada could quickly put them together if America invaded Canada. I was blown away by this as it seemed to come out of the blue. I cannot imagine America invading Canada. There is a concern about Canada invading America, however, as Canada has amassed 90% of it population along America's Northern border (from the satire of Americans and Canadians in the movie CANADIAN BACON). |

I think it mostly has to do with Canadians being jealous of our beer.

Perhaps it goes back to the days when the Canadians remained loyal to the Crown and the Americans were the rebels. Therefore the two nations would have for a time been enemies at war would they not? |

I don't think there really is any animosity. I love Canada, I have only been to a very small portion of it, specifically the Peace Gardens in Saskatchewan, Niagara Falls and Toronto, but all those places were amazing, and the people in Toronto are very kind and helpful. (they directed us to the best place to eat in the city) Yay Canada!!!

Time to put something here

It, as with all many other countries, all comes down to inferiority and superiority complexes. Some Canadians feel they have something to prove which leads to animosity, and some Americans feel they are better then every one else which feeds the animosity. The only way this will end is if Canada becomes a supper power or if the US losses the statues. In every day dealings how ever I don’t think there is much to worry about on this issue as for the most most part Canada and the US are friends and when it matters this animosity is quickly forgotten. |

Noah, I'm curious - what restaurant did they consider "the best". There are many good ones.
Who - Generally there is no major animosity that I can see. In fact I am going down to the States in a couple of weeks. (Walt Disney World here we come!) However, I have seen the animosity growing and I think that a large part of it is the conservatism of the US as compared to the liberal attitude in Canada. We just think differently and at times Canadians get a bit overwhelmed because we share this continent with you, but the US is so much larger then Canada. I think that people here would also like it if "free trade" really meant "free trade". Goodwill is not bought when some sectors in the US try to block Canadian goods (Beef and lumber come to mind) |

Actually, Dan, I think that is an accurate assessment. I really wish I could remember the name Min. It was right next to the Hockey Hall of Fame and featured several different stands with different types of foods almost all of it homemade. Such as homemade pasta, stir-fry, pizza, steak, etc. I think it's a French name and starts with an E. That's the best I can do. It was about 5 years ago. The cool thing about Canada too is that I got to try a Cuban cigar there. And yes, they are all that.

Marche. I used to have lunch there sometimes when I worked downtown. There should be an accent on the e, but I don't know how to do that. The food there is pretty good, but far from the best in Toronto. Next time you come I will give you a list of good restaurants. Some may be out of the way - but that is always how you find the best places. My husband used to work in the Elevator business, designing elevators. He worked on that building (First Canadian Place) and we were invited to the official opening. It was a blast. Lots of dignitaries, good food (from Marche) and live music from Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass (Fes may have heard of them) |

Thank you! I have been trying for years to remember that! I'm sure there's lots of great places in Toronto. It's really a world class city up there with NYC and SF in my opinion. I think they directed us there because there we were looking for variety. |

You guys are still upset about the war of 1812? Geeze... I didn't think that Canadiander and Americans had any real animosity, I thought that it was mostly just the ole good natured one-upsmanship type kidding around. One thing that amuzes and annoys me abit is whenever you're talking to a Canadiander and you mention anything at all, there is some Canadian tie in. "Oh, the guy who invented that was actually Canadian"; "That actor is Canadian."; "That's not as good as this, that or the other in Canadia", etc. etc. Why do so many talented Canadians come down to the USA to do all these great earthshaking things?!? Do we have to start the lumber and beef thing again? In all honesty, I'd love to go visit Canada sometime, ya know, to see the rest of Texas. |

Yeah, my post was in response to a bunch of posts and I only quoted yours because of the lumber remark. Oh, and we won the war after the war was over. We still have the constitution and everything.
