It's interesting to note too that the word Jihad is often used in the book and the movie Dune.

Noah

I agree that Dune has many similarities to the Arab world. It is mainly sand and it has such importance because of the power of the spice. Many other things too.

You know, I hadn't thought of that.

The Fremen live in the wasteland of the universe which is important only for the use of the spice, which propels FTL vehicles. The spice differs in that it also can be used as a drug, but petroleum has multiple consumer uses as well.
The Fremen's land is constantly being overrun by foreign invaders and power is constantly changing hands. It's the trouble spot of the universe, and outsiders don't understand the natives, and the natives are distrustful of outsiders.
Wow. Excellent job who!!!

Noah and who---doesn't Dune also use the term 'mujahideen' which is an Arab word used for those who fight or struggle for a holy cause?

I don't remember. However, their language seems very similar to Arabic.

Remember the scene where Maud'Dib rides the worm the first time?

Mmmmmmmmmm Shai Haluud. :meditate:

Bless it's comings and goings, for it makes the world.

To All: The Dune and 1984 comments are mildly related to the main topic. Please do not go any further into discussing the actual movies/books.

Just as a reminder...

The topic of the thread is Muslims and Radical Islam and how it varies from country to country (percentage per population, general climate, etc.).

24, you have full permission to spank me for this, but I just remembered what psyfi was referring to in terms of the Mujahadeen.

Stilgar created Paul's personal elite squadron called the Feyd Akeen.

OK, let the punishment commence.

:spank: Bad Noah!

Could be this was what I was thinking of. It's been a long time since I read DUNE.

Thanks for keeping us on track. :adove: :adove: :adove:

I do think that a little bit of tangents and humor is good for the soul and discussion. We are discussing somewhat serious issues here but it seems we should enjoy the discussion as well.

If you want me just to argue with psyfi I can do that too because her new avatar is just so cute.

And when you see cute things you want to argue?

The term for terrorist in the Patriot Act is broad enough to include me.  It's broad enough to include nearly everyone.

Dude... you were trying to destroy the whole world except for an island you were on... of course you are a terrorist. If it wasn't for Dr Bashir it would have been all over. Come on get it together Dr Noah. :P

Seriously though... I do not know the percentage of radical muslims in the states... but I can garuantee you there will be less if they try to hurt the United States.

You can enjoy the discussion all you want, but keep it relatively on topic. Discussing in depth the movies/books Dune and 1984 has nothing to do with the topic at hand. At most, the books warranted a brief mention.

If you want to do an in depth comparison of a book, then start a thread in the appropriate forum.

To all:

Please, no more with the "I’m sorry 24 for continuing to take this thread off topic." Have some respect for the people who start the thread or the subject that is supposed to be discussed and just don’t do it. Its as simple as that.

A reply to this Moderator Comment on this thread is not expected. Any further comments pertaining to this issue should be taken to the PM system.
