I do hope this lives up to the promise that it has and that the IRA are serious about ending the armed conflict. The sooner that we can have devolved Government back in Northern Ireland rather than London-based administration the better. Then Sinn Fein can concentrate on working to peacefully persaude a majority of the Northern Irish population of the case for unification with the Republic of Ireland - something I think should and will eventually happen. |

This is the most amazing news story of the week. I have a friend who called up several of her friends that live in Ireland (all Catholics) to ask about this and they say that it is totally on the up and up. I sure hope so. |

I saw parts of Adams(?) speech live yesterday. It is indeed good news. Apparently violent struggle using terrorist tactics has become counterproductive to their political aims. No doubt in light of recent global events. Let's hope their realization becomes apparent to others as well. |

The existance of the IRA has always acted as a barrier to Sinn Feins political ambitions. When in the past you were talking about maybe one Westminster MP and a few Councillors that was, in their calculation, maybe not worth giving up violence for. When you are talking about Adams being Deputy First Minister in the Northern Ireland Executive, Sinn Fein being the second largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, them winning several Westminister seats as well as other notable gains such as with the Mayor of Belfast then the equation changes. Violence no longer becomes worth more than what they have to gain politically. |

Do you think violence helped them to accomplish their political ends? Was it necessary? Or could they have got there sooner without it? |

I dont know about sooner, who can say. What I will say is that it would have been better had they done it without violence and spared the lives of thousands. |

It's good news, but I will believe it when I see it. I guess it would not surprise me if there are those on the other end of the extreme spectrum that might not try to provoke an armed response from the IRA. It's not unheard of in these situations... |

Hopefully it is a small minority that want to continue the old ways...and hopefully those will be less organized. |
