If Kirk was retired while inspecting the Enterprise B, was he in any position to take command and start giving orders?

Now, I know that a person with Kirk's record would be listened to immidiatly, but that aside, could he have taken command?

Apparently we look like this now
Well, the captain did ask for his help, so I'd assume that he was in shape to take command.

Yes, remember Kirk sat (uneasily) back while the Enterprise-B captain tried everything he could think of to rescue the El-Auran ships. Prompting Scotty to ask Kirk if there was something wrong with his chair...

In the U.S. military a retired servicemember may formally be addressed by their rank last held...and in some cases give out awards.....I'm not sure about the status..but it is expected to follow their orders when appropriate. Kirk wans't kicked out for incompetence or anything. And I think the Captain of the ENT-B could deputize Kirk.

Wasn't Kirk wearing a uniform in that scene? If so, wouldn't imply that he was still in service?

How do you know he was retired?

The uniform on Kirk, Scotty and Chekov were probably for ceremonial purposes.

How do you know he was retired?

A line from Scotty to Kirk: "Finding retirement a little dull are we?" (paraphrased)

I guess I missed that. So the uniform is irrelevant.

Again, with the U.S. military you can formally maintain you're title if retired...and anyone with an honorable discharge is authorized to wear the uniform (and by "authorized" it is formally recognized by the government).

Yeah, like anyone's going to question Kirk taking command even if he were wearing a bunny suit.

Besides, the young captain was still technically in command of the ship and had the command chair. Kirk was just "helping him out".

Now that's an interesting scenario...

Picture this:

Harriman: Captain Kirk, you have the comm.
Kirk: Better hop to it mister!
