Fantasy role-playing; Is it evil?

When I was a teen, I loved playing role-playing games. Specifically Palladium (www.palladiumbooks.com) and often times our youth group at church would have what they called lock ins, where the youth group just hung out in the church all night, playing games, listening to music and watching movies.
I brought my TMNT RPGs to play once (TMNT before they were pizza swilling surfers by the way). The pastor was mortified and took me aside to tell me how pretending to be someone else and having adventures involving killing other characters was going to stain my soul.
I don't get it. I highly doubt God is opposed to me playing RPGs. It's just a game, and a tool for the imagination.
Everyone has heard of the psycho kid who killed himself after his character got killed or dressed up in robes and decided to perform some rituals. Keep in mind, these kids were not stable from the start, they just got a focus for their psychosises.

What do you all think?

I think your pastor was a little out of order! Telling a kid that would terrify them!

Af for pretending to be someone else - that is what games are all about! A break from reality!

You can't go casting spells in real life, so you do it in an RPG. You can't kill people (legally) so you do it on a game!

It's better than going out and doing it for real.

I think that basically these games are fine for kids. Some, of course, are more impressionable than others and one might want to watch out for that and really should. But beyond this, I think role playing games are no threat to children and/or adolescents.

No I don't think they are evil. People do stuff in fantasy all the time that they would never do in real life. I find people who lack imagination don't understand why others like to play games like this.

No. Maybe if the fantasy game is about worshipping the devil or something.

To be perfectly honest 24, there are a number of characters you can play that have ties to demonic forces. I tend to play more heroic types though.

I'd like to be a bad guy in a game for once!

I do have a character I played just a few times who is a White Lead Leopard, an assasin for the Chinese Yama Kings of the Fifth Hell I think.

Mystic China. It's one of my all time favorite settings. Tons of Chinese mythology and magic which is similar but very different than western culture.

Interestingly enough, the Eastern mythologies have very similar creatures such as dragons, demons, ghosts and fairies, but the way they behave is somewhat different.

Check out www.palladiumbooks.com if you want to see more about it.

You usually find upon closer examination that these confused and depressed young people have a host of other, more real problems in their life. A hostile family environment, being bullied at school, sexual abuse, etc. etc... There's always going to be a small group of narrow minded people who are going to think that an RPG or a video game is the "cause".

I've always had a need for fantasy and play in my life; ever since I was a kid. Even now I must occasionally immerse myself in a good video game just to fulfill this need and "get away from everything" for an hour or two.

Fantasy is often where we explore the deeper aspects of who we are. I'm certain that some of us from time to time have fantasized about being on the USS Enterprise, or Voyager, or DS9.... I know that I have. Besides, regular day to day reality can sometimes become so mundane.

Agreed Franko.

When I want to be entertained, I want it to be as far from reality as possible. I get enough reality on a daily basis without watching it on TV.

Yes, it is very evil, and so are you for playing it. You should burn...

Just kidding, I have played D&D a few times, it was pretty cool. My brother plays all the time.
