A Robot in Disguise

I am up late tonight.

Here we get the Joyce Meyer show, whatever that is called, in the small hours of the morning.

Often I leave the TV on and forget whats on till Joyce Meyer comes on screaming through the TV at me.

Tonight it dawned on me that the only exposure to religion I get nowadays is this show and door knockers, both of which are fairly intrusive sources.

With Joyce Meyer, she may command the attention of the already converted, but not exactly a great advertisement to those not converted , who may be turned off by this woman screaming through the TV at you.

I noticed lately that the charity Christian Childrens fund has changed their name to CCF, to attarct more donations have they needed to de-emphasize their Christian elemement.

So for the average family, where the parents arent religous how do any messages get through?

I have little exposure myself except for the occasional Jehovah's Witness and the occasional politician invoking God for his/her own political gain.

And as a lot of weddings are conducted with a celebrant nowadays, the last 4 times I have set foot in a church was for a funeral, definately negative reinforcement

Most times when I go to church it's for Christmas, and I always enjoy that. Last time I was in a church was for a baptism, which I also enjoyed.

I think nowadays that a lot of young people get exposed to religion, just taking Christianity for example, by friends from school, or a relative that they know. Strangely enough, some of my 'evangelical' friends grew up in families where there was little or no religious emphasis or pressure.

I sometimes like to surf these early morning televangelist shows; it's highly entertaining. Usually these programs are already "preaching to the converted", and boy, do they give the "already converted" a rough time. Some of them have magnificent technique and presentations; watching Benny Hinn just about blows my mind. Either this guy's the messiah or he should be investigated by the FBI (which he has).

That 'Creflon Dollar' guy is just so out of the park; his act is so over the top that I almost can't believe that thinking people would fall for this. They're all "wolves seeking to devour" in my opinion; although I always had some respect for Billy Graham; one of the few mass-media preachers whose ministry was independantly audited and the figures accessible to anyone who was interested.

It's not even the soliciting for money that bothers me; it's the incredible egomania on the part of these people. They really do act as though they have some kind of priviledged cosmic authority. Yeah? Then so do I, meathead.

I caught some of her sermon the other Sunday for the first time and something she said actually resonated with me. She is a bit in your face though.

Probably through other people they come into contact with. Then possibly TV. However, I don't know how many children are watching services on TV.

Okay, someone help me out with this guy’s name. He and his barbie doll wife are like the biggest televangelist in Texas right now. I caught a bit of one of his sermons a while back and he was hocking one of his books.

I remember thinking, this guy has shyster written all over him. He and his wife reminded me of a young Jim and Tammy Faye Baker (with more polish). I also thought if there was ever a guy into kinky stuff, its him.

Most of the televangelist that I see are a hoot. Binny Hinn reminds me a little of that guy on Fletch II.

I occasionally come across Jack Van Impe and his wife Rexella real late at night. I’ll watch a few minutes of that.

I like Joyce Meyers, Creflo Dollar, Kenneth Copeland, Joel Osteen, and Jerry Savelle (who is the best of the best). I long ago stopped judging how the televangelists preach and just started listening to what they say. I found most of their messages very appealing. I don't believe all of their metaphysical claims but I think that if most people would listen and then put into practice what most televangelists say about faith and how to use it to have miracles, they could greatly add to their lives.

You consider attending a funeral to be negative reenforcement? I find that rather odd as in most funeral services the emphasis is on the idea that the person's life is to be celebrated and that they are (generally presumed*) to be in a better place.

*: I say "generally presumed" due to witnessing an old edition of a BBC sketch comedy program years ago called "Dave Allen at Large." On one occasion he tackled this particular subject. He showed a somber gravesite service, the minister explaining how all present knew that the departed was now heaven with God. Just at that moment there is a puff of smoke and the devil appears and says: "I beg to differ..." :evil2:

Nothing at all really!

I occasionally go to a church for a wedding/funeral, but other than that it's pretty dull on the religion front with me.
