It seems Scott Bakula's view has changed somewhat. What he says below is why we canceled UPN.
http://www.trektoday.com/news/300705_03.shtml By Michelle July 30, 2005 - 3:33 PM Star Trek: Enterprise's Scott Bakula blamed UPN for the woes of his series but said it was impossible to predict that the people at Paramount who had supported the franchise would all be gone within four years. "I would say simply that we've been on the wrong network for four years," Bakula announced in Star Trek Magazine (via TrekWeb). "That hardly ever happens, honestly. If you're on the wrong network you don't make it out of the first year. But because of a lot of history and positioning and, if you will, corporate synergy, we managed to stay alive for four years...we did manage to squeeze four years out of being at the wrong place." Discussing how his character, Captain Jonathan Archer, developed over those four years, Bakula said that he liked him a lot at the start: "There were elements in the pilot of a guy who was basically inexperienced and raw and a little bit of a loose cannon." From there, "we got into an area for a while where he was awestruck. That worked and it had value, and I felt that near the end of Season Three and during this season we got into a maturing and a hardening and a toughening up of this guy." Bakula was sorry not to have had more of an opportunity to see Archer relax, or to show that he was happier out in space exploring the universe without being constrained by the events back home. "We were very attached to the events of our world," he observed. Because the show's run was abbreviated, Archer's personal life received little attention. "No one could have ever predicted the amount of upset within Viacom in the last four years, in terms of personnel changing and philosophies changing," said Bakula. "Timing is everything especially in television. We're a victim of that and at the same time, we got 98 hours of television out of it." The complete interview is in Star Trek Magazine, which also has a poll surveying readers' favourite captains, characters, episodes and elements of the magazine among the questions. The excerpts above are from TrekWeb. |

He definately has a point. Friends of mine in Nebraska couldn't catch it until the third season because they didn't have a UPN network carrier. |

I wonder what it would have been like if ENT went the route of first run syndication. UPN is just overall a crap network and should fold. I think part of the reasons why TNG and DS9 (And to an extent Star Trek) did so well was because they were in syndication meaning that everyone was able to watch it, just at different times of the week. |

I predict UPN will go under within the next 5 years. |

I wish it was less than that, but it seems that UPN has finally found an identity with targeting towards the women teenagers. I think you're right with the 5 year prediction. |

I doubt it. UPN had plenty of other garbage in their lineup. However I do wish they will bring all the Trek series back to this network. Right now SpikeTV is a joke and the Trekiverse does need a home.

That's what I mean. Other than Enterprise, what do they do that isn't garbage. I really wish Sci-fi would buy the syndication rights for all Trek series. |

I would much perfer it to go to Sci-fi than Spike. Sci-fi already has the original, so having the rest would be great. Having a weeks worth of Star Trek marathons in thier rotation would be sweet, not to mention the fact that Sci-fi would probably advertise it better than Spike. |

And, it would be uber-cool if they show each series in succession so you can have a marathon EVERYDAY!!!!

Hmmm. Picture this - Four hours worth of Star Trek everyday broadcast in proper episode order in succession. Add the movies, behind the scene specials, features, news, biograhphies and documentaries and we will have the start of a specialty network. Sweet.

Be nice if some station did that...not that I'd watch if the BBC or someone pulled their finger out over here. That's what I've got the lot on video for.

Rub eyes. You owe me a coffee, Fes, for forcing me to watch the entire second season DVD box set in one sitting. Here is my review. Shockwave II. What the hell is going on? I was hoping there was a recap as they had done for Best of Both Worlds in the TNG DVD box set. I was totally lost without seeing part one first. Yoshi loosing her shirt was eye candy to say the least. It's almost as bad as a nude Seven posing for the Doctor in Voyager or Lwaxanna Troi walking into Ten-Forward in her birthday suit. Carbon Creek. This episode reminded me of My Favorite Martian. Don't ask. Minefield. Interesting exchange between Reed and Archer. This was by far one of the best character development episodes B&B had schemed up. Was the man in the blue uniform serving Archer his breakfast at the start of the episode the Chef? Or was it just one of his helpers? Dead Stop. What more can I say? I love Roxann Dawson's sexy voice. If you look carefully there were several recognizable aliens in the "Brain" Room including a Klingon, Hirogen and Cardassian. More to come. Stay tune. EDIT - Oops. Fes or other Mods, please move this thread over to the official review thread. I must be tire from watching all 18 hours worth of the box set in a row. |
