Okay, I know you all have harped on him here and there, but I wanted a discussion all in one thread...If you hate Wesley, why? Personally I like the character. I think his developing father-son-like relationship with Picard was one of the more interesting and thought-provoking story arcs in the series. The scenes with the two in 'Samaritan Snare' and 'The Last Mission' were particularly well-developed, I thought. And I didn't have much of a problem with his acting or his personality that the script called for. I do think he left at a good time and in an appropriate way for the story...both times so to speak.
Actually, the character that I liked the least was always, and remains, Troi. And I think Marina Sirtis the worst actor/actress of the show...perhaps that's why I didn't like Troi all that much. Anyway, why do you hate the prodigal Ensign? |

I had no problem with Wesley whatsoever. I thought he was a positive element to the show, and I liked Gene's idea for him from the get-go. BTW, does The Last Mission = Journey's End? |

I liked him. It just got a bit silly when a 15 year old boy was saving the flagship of the fleet that is supposedly manned by the best Starfleet has to offer. |

I really didn’t have much of a problem with Wesley. I thought he added much to the series. Sure he was occasionally annoying, but what person isn’t (especially before they reach adulthood). I really liked the father/son mentor/mentored roll Picard and Wesley played. Wesley needed a strong male influence in his life because he missed his own father so much, and Picard personally grew from playing that father figure/mentor. Actually, I think the entire crew acted as a surrogate parent/mentor/good influence in Wesley's life. It was much like a family at times on the series. I loved that about TNG. |

You're probably right, History Dude with your assessment. Bashing Wesley is a relatively recent trend particularily among the guys who now think his character is a bit of a joke. I myself have participated in "100 ways to kill Wesley" threads in other forums and enjoyed myself, but I don't really seriously dislike his character when I'm actually watching an episode. Wil Wheaton was actually a pretty good actor on the show, and I think his being in the cast was an attempt to make TNG a real "family" show in a way. As for Troi, it's hard to say. Plus I don't want to get in trouble |

Ah, good point. All in good fun. And it seems like others so far like him just fine.

I think the character developed well over time. My problem with him initially was his being the Sci-fi standard "gifted kid" that was often found on television programs (another example? remember Boxy on the original Battlestar Galacticia?). The whole "acting ensign" bit grated. Really, would you hand responsibility for piloting the flagship of the Federation to an untrained teenager? Actually, the best thing that happened to his character was to finally send him off to the Academy and make him recurring character as they did. Episodes like "First Duty" (I think that was the one where he and his squadron have an accident and try to cover it up) were very good. |

I also liked him in was it the last mission where he is stranded on a planet with Picard or when he and his squadron try to cover up a death. But as Welsby said it was just for me the fact that the flagship of the fleet manned by the best and brightest was saved what felt like very often by an untrained 15 year old boy. I mean, the best and brightest and no one else knows you can switch the tractor beam into reverse. The smartest best trained officers and nobody else realises that the game is an evil mind control device. |

I thought Wesley was ok and I did like him in Last Mission but my problem with him was I felt he was used to much - more than some of the Senior Staff were. |
