Is there a connection between religion and beards? If so, what is that connection? |

Not all religions ask for men to grow beards, but some do. In Judaism Hasidic Jews grow beards but not all Orthodox people do. The reason for this is a passage in the Torah. I found this article with FAQ on Hasidism Take a look at the picture on the side - the guy is wearing a Star Trek uniform and he provides a link to another site that discusses Jewish influence on Star Trek. I happened on this purely by accident but I have got to go read that article now. I will post it if I find anything worth linking.

That much is obvious. Muslims, Orthodox Christian priests, Amish, and Hasids wear long beards (generally). Except for Amish the connection I see is that these religions originated in the middle east. I'm just thinking out loud. I wonder if there is some purpose behind this. |

Well - maybe you can check out those other religions and see if there is anything in common with the reasons mentioned in the article I listed. |

In Judaism at least i know that it is written in th bible ('old' testament) that the 'corners of our head' are fobidden to be shaved. This refers to our side burns. It is also mentioned in the bible that a man is forbidden to bring a blade to his flesh and remove hair. The orthodox take this to the 'max' (<-- the 'max' being too simple of a word to put into this context and will try to clarify later - maybe 'a step futher' is a better term) And dont bring a 'balde' to the whole face, i.e. growing a beard. THer is a large tradition (in modern othrodox i particular) that it is fine to shave until married and then uopn marriage to grow a beard. I guess that could be considured more of a tradition. |

Interesting. I wonder what the Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and Amish connection between the beard and their particular religions is. I wonder if this has its roots in Indo-European culture. |
